The Rubano Tapes Vol. 2 is a live album by The Smashing Pumpkins documenting 18 songs from early shows. It is the fourth archive release by the band and the second volume of The Rubano Tapes following Volume 1. Rubano refers to Billy Corgan's close friend Mike Rubano (known to the band as "Cuz"), that accompanied the band and recorded their live shows and rehearsals from 1988 to 1991.
The album was announced on November 20, 2022,[1] and went on sale exclusively through Madame ZuZu's on November 25. By the following day all copies were sold out.[2] All copies were pressed on mustard yellow vinyl, with 100 copies signed by Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha. Online sales shipped around December 18.
“ | I was shocked when I actually went through all the tapes and all the songs (you know, the 26 versions of "Bury Me" or whatever). I was shocked that the seeds of the band that got really big later were there and present that early. … There's little moments and flashes where you go "oh man that's the Mellon Collie band; oh man that's Adore". It's weird. You almost hear every record that we made in the 90s in these early tapes. So the band's character and identity was well well-formed before anybody cared about us. | ” |
