SP on the Radio 1988-89 / Starchildren Live 8.19.90 is a two LP archival release from Madame ZuZu's that documents early radio performances by The Smashing Pumpkins, as well as the August 18, 1990 performance by the Billy Corgan-led side project, Starchildren. The album was announced on May 6, 2024,[1] and released May 11 for online and in-store purchase. 1,800 copies were pressed on glass-colored vinyl, with 100 copies autographed by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin which quickly sold out,[2] with reports of Shopify being unable to handle the influx of international orders.[3]
SP on the Radio 1988-89[edit | edit source]
The SP on the Radio portion of the release documents some of the earliest recordings of The Smashing Pumpkins, back when Jimmy Chamberlin had only recently been recruited to the band. Some tracks even make use of a drum machine. These recordings were submitted to Chicago college radio stations WZRD and WNUR. While bootlegs have existed of the songs that aired on WZRD, SP on the Radio was pressed from the pre-broadcast tapes. The recordings are among the first, if not the very first, examples of The Smashing Pumpkins performing live on FM radio.[4]
Starchildren Live 8.19.90[edit | edit source]
Starchildren was an early side project of Billy Corgan that performed a few live shows from 1990 to 1994, each usually featuring a different lineup of band members with only Corgan having constant involvement. Starchildren Live 8.19.90 documents the August 18, 1990 performance at the Metro which featured Corgan on guitar and Jimmy Chamberlin on bass playing to a drum machine. The show was recorded by Mike Rubano,[4] who recorded many of the band's shows in the early years, some of which appeared on the previous archive releases The Rubano Tapes Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.
The release features four songs written by Corgan that were previously unknown to fans: "Past Midnight", "Faeding", "Lolly" and "Reasons To Shine". The final Starchildren track, "Blue Light", was previously performed live by The Smashing Pumpkins on March 30, 1990.
