Album of the week
Look to the Sky is the second solo album from James Iha, released on March 14, 2012 in Japan, and released globally the following September. It featured many guest collaborations, including Karen O and Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Sara Quin (Tegan and Sara), Nathan Larson (Shudder To Think), Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Tom Verlaine (Television) and Mike Garson. "To Who Knows Where" acted as the lead single supporting the international release. The album received positive critical reviews, with Chicago Sun-Times writing "Iha shows up with this well-written, beautifully played set as a gentle reminder of his talent.".
Song of the day
"Cyr" is the first Smashing Pumpkins single from their eleventh studio album, CYR. Corgan told Rolling Stone, "Cyr is dystopic folly, one soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and sped up time. To me it stands as both hopeful and dismissive of what is and isn’t possible with faith.". The Linda Strawberry-directed music video was well-received, and Jimmy Chamberlin's dance moves became a fan favorite, ultimately dubbed the #jimmyshimmy on social media. AllMusic said the song invoked the "tense, trembling atmospheres the Pumpkins excel at". "Cyr" peaked at #21 on the Billboard Rock Digital songs chart and at #22 on Alternative Airplay in 2020.
Did you know...
- ...that a cheat code in the game Doom is a reference to a 1993 Usenet joke called Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Piles Of Putrid Debris (SPISPOPD), and this is reason the Doom explosion sound was sampled in "Where Boys Fear to Tread"?
- ...that until the release of The Offspring album Smash in 1994, Gish was the best-selling independently released album of all time?
- ...that former touring Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Mark Stoermer was an additional executive producer on the live action music video for "Wyttch"?
- ...that the Siamese Dream booklet was supposed to be by an outsider artist, but after disagreements with the label, Corgan was forced to step in at the last minute? On the day after their wedding, he and his wife scrambled to put something together, using photos of strangers and Corgan's family with lyrics handwritten on top.
- ...that the Pumpkins' July 17, 1998 performance was a free show that drew upwards of 125,000 fans, and that the mayor declared July 17 "Smashing Pumpkins Day"?
