Album of the week

American Gothic is the fourth EP by The Smashing Pumpkins. It was released in January 2008, with Billy Corgan describing it as a continuation of their 2007 album Zeitgeist. Corgan told the LA Times that the band had "finally turned the corner... where it's starting to feel like our music again, and not theirs, whoever 'they' might be," referring to the band's choice to continue making music without a record label. The EP contains four unreleased acoustic tracks recorded in the late 2007. Consequence of Sound wrote "If anything, Gothic is a step forward from Zeitgeist", while AllMusic said the EP "proves that the well-received Zeitgeist wasn't just a Corgan-fueled fluke".

Song of the day

"Landslide" is an acoustic arrangement of the Stevie Nicks song that The Smashing Pumpkins covered on the Pisces Iscariot compilation. It went on to become one of the band's most-beloved tracks and even had the approval of Nicks herself. "There's nothing more pleasing to a songwriter than [someone else] doing one of their songs. ['Landslide'] also led me to being friends with Billy [Corgan] and the possibility that we'll work together," she said of Corgan, though a collaboration never materialized. The song was a hit, peaking at #3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks and at #30 on the US Airplay charts.

The Smashing Pumpkins officially announce their collaboration with Few Spirits for a SP-branded bourbon whiskey made from Madame ZuZu's Midnight Rose tea. The product had been available for some time but was not publicly advertised.

Madame ZuZu's announces the next archival release, a 2 LP set consisting of SP on the Radio 1988-89 / Starchildren Live 8.18.90. Release date is May 11 at 12 PM CST exclusively through madamezuzus.com.
