"Moss" is the fourth track from Act II of The Smashing Pumpkins' 2023 rock opera, ATUM. According to Billy Corgan, as a song of propaganda within the story of ATUM, it's intentionally sanded down to be easy to understand.[1]

The song went through a few iterations, first beginning as a "creepy electronic song". Then a more rock-oriented approach was attempted, before the band landed on the final studio version.[1]

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

(performed by The X+I)

In the song "Neophyte", June decides she'd rather be near Shiny and takes "The March of Life" just as he did. This alerted the other exiles in space, who all decided as a form of rebellion to also take "The March of Life". Meanwhile on Earth, the general public starts to notice what's happened. The situation put pressure on the government to make a statement. "Moss" is the statement the head of the X+I makes in attempt to reassure the public that they have everything under control, and that the public didn't see what they think they saw.[1]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

You didn't see what you saw
You didn't hear what you heard
You didn't wish what you'd want
You didn't feel where you hurt
Yeah, yeah
It's always
Or never know
Yes, yes
It's always or never know
Or never know

You didn't seek what you sought
You didn't fear what we've learnt
You didn't dare where we've stepped
You didn't claw in the dirt
Moving heaven and hurt
Dirt, dirt
Moving heaven and earth
Hurt, hurt

No voiceless voices
No soulless souls
So, these starz have flown
As some error within
Every system blown to pieces

You didn't seek what you sought
You didn't fear what we've learnt
You didn't dare where we've stepped
You didn't claw in the dirt
Moving heaven and hurt
Dirt, dirt
Moving heaven and earth
Hurt, hurt
Hurt
