Steps In Time
"Steps In Time" is the seventh track from Act I of The Smashing Pumpkins' 2023 rock opera, ATUM.
Billy Corgan has said he stole the song title from Fred Astaire's autobiography of the same name.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
(performed by June to those images of Shiny she has framed)
We're now back in space with June after she's received the message from Osirah. June knows Osirah is on Earth, but Osirah doesn't know June is in space. June is amazed that there's someone on Earth who cares about Shiny's suicidal "March of Life". June writes back to Osirah, telling her in an encrypted message that if she wants to find out who the real Shiny is, she should go to specific geographic coordinates. There is a "treasure" hidden at these coordinates.[1]
"Steps In Time" is basically June's celebration that her message was received and Shiny is remembered. She's metaphorically facing towards Shiny and saying "see, I was right, people do miss you", and that he doesn't know how important she is to him. June's destiny to save Shiny is now coming to fruition.[1]
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
can you
can you hear me?
can you feel
you feel me?
written as a birthright
on pregnant bough, a guarded night
is it more than what you'd bargained for
steps in time
we're steps in time
risen to the fore
yet rotten to our core
more has ceded more
where history divides
do you love me?
i'm shouting out
will you need me now?
i've had it all but the honor
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
will you love me?
shouting out what the ages brought
and triumph not what goes reeling
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
dream-dream of new dreams
it's the cream of blessed shock
boy, your gift a'int squandered
boy, your head screams artifice
to the aught decembrists we bid bye-bye
steps in time
we're steps in time
do you love me?
i'm shouting out, will you need me now?
i've had it all but the honor
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
will you love me?
shouting out what the ages brought
and triumph not what goes reeling
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
sha-la-la
