The July 23, 1992 performance was a particularly notable Smashing Pumpkins show at Chicago's Cabaret Metro that saw the live debut of "Starla", "Spaceboy" and "Daydream", the final performance of "Blue", and the last performance of "Obscured" until October 5, 2011. All songs were performed acoustic except for the encore, a 10+ minute "Starla", making it (as of November 2022), the longest performance of the song on record. The show had the classic Pumpkins lineup along with appearances by cellist Eric Remschneider (who arranged/performed the strings on "Disarm" and "Soma") and Kerry Brown on percussion.

Notes[edit | edit source]

Banter[edit | edit source]

BC: Good evening. How are you?
Guy in crowd: Love you!
Iha: And uh, someone wanna take care of that guy over there, heh heh, that guy's a problem.
BC: Let’s kick this guy out.
Iha: The guy with the Ozzy Osbourne T-shirt.
Obscured (acoustic)
BC: Sorry it's so cold. Should be warm in summer.
Disarm (acoustic)
> Rocket (acoustic)
BC: Thank you very much. That's a song from our next album which will never be made and um...this is another one from that sophomore slump album, called Hummer.
Hummer (acoustic)
BC: Thank you very kindly. We really appreciate you coming tonight. I hope you feel special. We don't. Here's a song, um, that wasn't good enough to be on our first album, but we still like it anyway. This is [2-3 unintelligible words, possibly intentionally].
Blue (acoustic)
Iha: Thank you very much.
Guy in crowd: Tristessa!
BC: Oh yeah, we playin’ all the rock hits tonight. This is a song by, um, Mr. Syd Barrett. As sung by James Saint James.
Terrapin (acoustic)
BC: I can’t hear you. Yes. Is everybody out there, it's like so quiet, I guess that's good, but....
(crowd cheers)
Iha: We’re just used to people--
BC: Heh heh, we're used to that decadent rock and roll atmosphere.
Iha: We're used to people...moshing around and--
BC: And no one's abusing us.
Iha: Heh. Hurl insults if you will.
Siva (acoustic)
Iha: Thank you.
BC: This next song is about my little brother who's standing right here and I wanted to know if he wanted to come up on stage and play with us. Herr brother Jesse. This is called Spaceboy. If you knew him you'd understand...that it's not a bad thing.
Spaceboy (abandoned immediately)
(Billy tunes for a second)
BC: Guitar tuning.
Spaceboy (acoustic) (with Jesse Andersen)
BC: On tambourine...heh heh, Jesse. This is, um, only the second time we've ever played this song live, so...and it’ll be much better than the first time, if you were here.
D’arcy: I don't know, the last time was three years ago, so have patience.
Guy in crowd: Getting old!
Iha: We dedicate this set to the man with the Ozzy Osbourne T-shirt, Nick Palagon.
BC: Yes, you've met him in the gutter.
Daydream (acoustic)
BC: Thank you very much...for adding the middle.
Iha: We'd like to introduce our friend here, a man named Eric, a man of a cello and of many good -- many good deeds.
BC: He’s traveled far and wide to do good deeds.
Iha: He flew up all the way from Iowa just to do this show and the amazing thing, he had never heard of us before.
BC: And he's never played these songs. Here's a song from that debut album called Fish, this is Suffrage of the First World.
Suffer (acoustic) (with Eric Remschneider)
D’arcy: I wanna say thanks to all my friends and family and everyone else who didn't have anything better to do tonight.
(guitar tuning)
BC: I hate guitar, by the way, in case you were interested.
Jimmy: (off mic) You hate it?
BC: (laughing) Yeah, Jimmy hates it even worse. This here's another one of them next album songs...and this is called Luna.
Luna (acoustic) (with Eric Remschneider)
Iha: At this time, we’d like to uh...welcome a man named Kerry Brown to the stage.
BC: Kerry's in that new wave band, Catherine.
Iha: He's a man of good deeds as well.
BC: Alright, this is where we prove like completely out of our league, when we don't know what we're doing. And I ki -– actually, I’m not kidding. This song does not have a name or any words.
Improv (acoustic) (with Kerry Brown on drums & Eric Remschneider)
BC: That was wrong, man, yeah. Well, this is our last song and we'd like to dedicate it to you with all our...all our rusty bad hearts. And uh, please yes, and heh, thank you very much for coming and we hope you've had a good time.
Guy in crowd: See you tomorrow night!
BC: The show tomorrow night will be um...chanting.
Iha: We'll get.... We’re bringing in kind of a vaudeville type act, a mellow [2 unintelligible words].
Crush (acoustic)
BC: Thank you.
[encore break]
Iha: Okay, we will dispense with the stools and uh.... And.... Hey, do you think you're in a [1-2 unintelligible words]? Ha heh! Oh! ... We shall turn to 11 for you now.
Starla (with Kerry Brown on percussion)
BC: Thank you, goodnight, bye, thank you.
