The Smashing Pumpkins is a 1989 self-released demo tape by The Smashing Pumpkins sold at early shows. There were about 500 copies made with handwritten labels. Two songs, "Sun" and "Spiteface", were originally songs performed by Billy's previous band, The Marked.
The demo tape in its entirety was bundled with the deluxe 2012 reissue of Pisces Iscariot.[1]
Background and recording
The Smashing Pumpkins first live show with bassist D'arcy Wretzky occurred at The Avalon on August 10, 1988. The sound engineer at the club was Paul Chabala, who also owned a recording studio called Schwa Productions. It was at this show that Chabala and Billy Corgan met.
Recordings at Schwa Productions were done on an 8-track reel-to-reel over the course of three days (which may not have been consecutive), at the rate of $20 an hour. All band members were present and recorded their own instruments, except for "Nothing and Everything" which did not feature guitar from James Iha. The master reels have apparently been lost, as they are no longer in the band's possession. Consequently, the release on the 2012 Pisces Iscariot reissue was remastered from an original demo cassette.
