Banter

Buffalo Boys
Cri de Coeur
To Scatter One’s Own
Rider
BC: Thank you very much, thank you. That was the first time I ever played that song. ... You get old and you just.... This next song...it's about the here condition in this world. I think you know what I'm talkin' about.
Hard Times
Dancehall (with Linda Strawberry & Meena Ysanne)
BC: Thank you very much. Hope you're having a good time. These are all new songs from the new album that's coming out.
Anon (piano)
Cotillions (piano) (with Meena Ysanne)
Zowie (piano) (with Meena Ysanne)
BC: Thank you so much, thank you. How is everyone? ... In the old days with the band, we used to...have lots of jokes on stage. One of the jokes was you'd say "What do you wanna hear?" and this cacophony would start and you'd say, "Oh, we don't know that one." So I don't know that one.
Lady in crowd: Freebird.
BC: Yeah, we had a Freebird joke too but I don't wanna do it, so.... It involved me holding my genitals. True story!
Half-Life of an Autodidact (with Meena Ysanne)
BC: This song I wrote for my son, Augustus. But it's to all the parents here.
Aeronaut (with Meena Ysanne)
BC: I love this song but I don't know if I can do it justice, but I will try.
Oh, My Darling Clementine (with Meena Ysanne)
BC: Now Meena, who's been playing with me up here on stage on the violin...is from England, that far distant shore. And uh, when we were playing that song at soundcheck, she goes (English accent) "Oh right, that English song." (normal voice) I said, that's not an English song. It's an American song. We own that shit, man. Death, death, death.
Mandarynne (piano)
[set break]
Blew Away (with James Iha)
1979 (with James Iha)
Blue Skies Bring Tears (with James Iha)
BC: James Iha, everybody!
Iha: Thanks a lot.
BC: See, you deserve the best, I gave you the best.
The Empty Sea
Violet Rays
BC: Thank you so much. Who was here last night? (crowd cheers)
Guy in crowd: Minnesota!
BC: Minnesota? What was that Chris Cornell line?
Lady in crowd: You’re a lot better!
BC: Heh heh heh heh heh heh. Is it “I’m looking California but feeling Minnesota”, is that it? I’ve never felt Illinois-an, I can tell you that. It ain't "feeling Illinois". Last night I was talking...which, I'm wont not to do, but I was talking about how we have a jukebox in our kitchen, home in Chicago. And uh, it’s a 1953 jukebox, so all the songs in it are all old country and...and uh...and it’s pretty cool ‘cause my son, now that’s what he wants to hear, you know? So I’m program -- programming him well.
Lady in crowd: R&B, I hope.
BC: (makes a “no” noise). Country and western. So um, like to play a song for you now -- actually, a few covers. It’s covers to inside re a term, does he know what that means? Cover -- you'd cover someone else's song. And uh, heh heh heh.... So I'd like to play you a trio of songs, two of which are in my jukebox and I get to hear every morning when I eat my vegan gluten-free granola, heh heh. So um, this is a beautiful song by the um...is it Gosdin or Godsin? Godsin, Gosdin, Gosdin Brothers? Which um...Gene Clark, when he left the Byrds, did an album with the Gosdin Brothers. And really, that album is considered the album that created the Californian...uh, I don't know what they call it, new country or whatever -- well, the thing that led to the Eagles and the Byrds' country and this was the album that was so -- these guys were involved in that, so it's a beautiful song. And uh, it speaks to my heart, as a good song does, and uh...I guess the best compliment I can play a song is is when I um [sic]...when I wish I wrote it. So I love this song so I hope you enjoy it.
Hangin’ On
Another Bridge to Burn
(Billy is tuning guitar)
BC: Wow, that's so lazy.
(more tuning)
Lady in crowd: Even that sounds good!
(Billy strums guitar)
BC: I'll just play as though I'm not here.
Nights in White Satin
BC: I appreciate you, I really do, thank you so much. ... Thought somebody got hurt!
Lady in crowd: First one after 30 years!
BC: I’ve been to a hundred baseball games and I never caught a baseball. The guy I was in my first um...sort of new wave band with, a gentleman called Greg Bates, he lived across from Wrigley Field. House got torn down but if you go to Wrigley Field and you look right down the left foul pole, just in the house that was inside was his house. And so I’d go over there and we’d write our new wave songs when I was about 18 years old, circa 1985, and I know most of you were born after that, but...I know you don’t remember those times but I do. So, we’d be over there working on our new wave songs and the Cubs game would be going on across the street, so every time you'd be playing, (imitating crowd noise) “aaaah,” you know, right through the window. I said, "Gee, I’ve never -- have you ever caught a baseball?” It was like a dream of mine to go to the game with the glove and never.... And he goes, “Oh yeah, come here.” He takes me in his basement, he goes whoof, there’s like 20 baseballs. ‘Cause he’d sit out there and catch batting practice. And uh, I go, “Oh, can I have one?”, he goes, “No.” Needless to say, the band broke up.
Spaceboy
BC: Thank you so much. We’ve reached the end of this road. (crowd disapproves) Yeah...yeah.
Lady in crowd: No!
BC: Okay, not really. We all know it. Yeah! I mean, this state has no laws anymore, I mean you might as well just do what you wanna do. In Illinois, we have laws, so....
Knights of Malta (piano) (with Meena Ysanne)
BC: Okay, now we've reached the end! (begins Perfect) And this goes out to the brokenhearted.
Perfect (piano)
BC: God bless you everyone, thank you so much.
[encore break]
Ugly
Cast a Stone
BC: Now we've reached the end end. (crowd disappointed) Come on, you know you have drugs to do. Genderless people to have sex with. Laws to break, if there were laws. (crowd yelling) Hahahahaha. So, last night, in a rare moment of pip...that's a good word, right?...I asked the audience to participate. Which I'm normally not wont to do because I think it's fuckin' cheesy. But in this case, you strike me as people who would appreciate it. Bringing us closer to one another in mind, body and soul. And in a rare illustration of my working process, since you're now going to be in the band...as I stated last night, in the Pumpkins, we had a rule, which was we're only gonna say it once and you better fucking remember. We don't have time to play the song and then you'd forget and then we gotta start again, we don't have time for that shit, right? So you are now the band. And I'm giving you the look. We talked about the look last night. The look being this kind of..."how could you fuck up?" look. In fact, someone's here who sucked out the look. Not James, he's left. James doesn't get the look anymore. Heh heh! I think he's earned the right! So, just remember, when I give you this cue, that's when you sing. And all you have to remember, if you know the lyrics, which if you don't, you're not a real fan, so you shouldn't be here.... So all you have to remember -- if you wanted to write it down, I'm totally cool with that, use your phone, totally cool. None of us have minds anymore, it's all here, so we understand. What you have to remember is two, two and four. Two, two and four.
Guy in crowd: Two plus two equals four!
BC: No no. You don't wanna get the look. Trust me. It's two, two and four, that's all you have to remember. And you'll go home, you waltz into the night with a full heart and a sense of accomplishment. Or...you'll be one of those who wants to get the look...in which case, I won't give it to you. 'Cause that's how I roll. So two, two, four, right? Okay, we're all together, ready?
