Metro (formerly the Cabaret Metro) is a concert hall in Chicago, Illinois that first opened in 1982. It has a capacity of 1,100, divided between the main floor and the balcony. For years it was the go-to local venue for The Smashing Pumpkins, who performed both their first show in 1988 and their final show in 2000 before breaking up.
Metro is owned by Joe Shanahan, who also owns Double Door. He was an important influence in the early days of The Smashing Pumpkins. He insisted that they hire a drummer before agreeing to let them play the Metro, indirectly paving the way for the band's success.
In addition to the Pumpkins and related acts, the Metro helped jump start the careers of Liz Phair, Veruca Salt, Material Issue, and Urge Overkill.
