May 14, 1998 was the second date of the Adore tour and the first full length show. The show was held as part of Hafengeburtstag, Hamburg, Germany's annual anniversary celebration of the Port of Hamburg. Admission was free and the crowd overflow was massive: concert organizers expected attendance of 5,000 people but newspaper reports estimated that 25,000 people were there.

The lineup for the Adore tour was the most expansive yet. With original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin out of the band, John Mellencamp and Melissa Etheridge drummer Kenny Aronoff took the lead, with Dan Morris and Stephen Hodges on backup percussion. Famed pianist Mike Garson served as the keyboardist.
