Banter[edit | edit source]

Atum Intro
Empires
(BC after lyrics, before Jeff outro solo: Melbourne!)
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Iha: Thank you so much, Melbourne. How you guys doin’? We are the Smashing Pumpkins and uh, we’re happy, we’re very happy to be here in Melbourne.
Today
We Only Come Out at Night (acoustic)
Once in a Lifetime
Solara
Eye
(BC after 2nd chorus: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the rock show. We’re so pleased and grateful you’re with us tonight and we can only say over and over again: thank you, thank you, thank you.)
(BC during outro singalong: Sing it with us. Ow! Come on, come on! All the way in the back! One more time, one more time.)
> Ava Adore
(BC after Jimmy solo: Ow! Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums! I need a hot toddy, a hot toddy, a hot toddy.)
Iha: How you guys doin’, you alright?
Spellbinding
Iha: Thank you so much, Melbourne. We've now made it to the midway point. How you doin'?
Under the Milky Way (Billy/Iha acoustic)
Iha: Thank you. I listened to the Church all the time when I was in high school.
BC: James, how you feelin’ to-night?
Iha: I feel great, how you doin’?
BC: James...normally...
Iha: Yes?
BC: ...I’m feelin’ confident...
Iha: Yes?
BC: ...positive...
Iha: Yes?
BC: ...it’s a new thing.
Iha: Yep.
BC: And uh, there I was scrolling the other day, as we all do on our phones. Does anyone scroll on their phones here?
Iha: I hate...god--
BC: I know it’s a new thing, the kids are just getting into it, you scroll on your phone.
Iha: ...goddamn phones.
BC: And I saw...
Iha: Yes?
BC: ...you went viral. James Iha went viral, everyone. Now, James, you and I know why you went viral, you might be embarrassed, I think you should own the moment. Own the moment.
Iha: Ch –- ch –- chick, chicken salt.
BC: James, you did a rap about chicken salt.
Iha: Yes, I mean, I didn’t know about it and uh, I’m so glad I know about it now, but I don’t know if we need to talk about it. What do you guys wanna talk about? What other than chicken salt is...really, uh, grabbing your imagination?
BC: Now James, you know I hate to put you on the spot.
Iha: I’m sure.
BC: But this is probably the best audience we’ve had so far on this tour.
Iha: That’s ‘cause we’re in Melbourne. Is it Melborne or Melburn? Yeah.
BC: And this is the thing...not only is this the best audience of this tour, this is one of the best tours we’ve ever had!
Iha: It’s ‘cause we’re down under in Oz.
BC: Now I’d like to think it’s these wonderful people putting down their hard earned money and coming to the show, but your chicken rap is -– chicken salt rap is taking it to another level. Taking it to a new other level!
Iha: Now, we don’t have to revisit it again ‘cause one time is enough.
BC: Here’s the thing: I know you like to freestyle.
Iha: Yeah?
BC: I know you’re big on freestyling.
Iha: But only one time.
BC: James, I’m gonna put you on the spot, I think we should do a freestyle Melbourne only version of the chicken salt rap.
Iha: I’d actually like to talk about seventy percent of the world’s most dangerous animals, which reside in Australia.
BC: That’s the thing about freestyling, you can just, “Yo! Check it. There’s a lot of snakes here.”
Iha: The Huntsman spider, the funnel-web spider. Okay, let’s not, (trails off laughing). Alright, I guess we’ll talk about the goddamn chicken salt.
BC: Here we go.
Chicken Salt Improv (Iha vocals w/Billy acoustic)
Iha: I had chips. I call ‘em french fries. I said what’s this. It said salt. No, it’s chicken salt. It’s chicken salt, it’s chicken salt. Chicken salt in my brain and now I’ve got a whole fuckin’ can...of chicken salt. Chicken salt. Chicken salt coursin’ through my veins.
BC: Yo, chicken.
Iha: That’s about –- it’s about as...all I got. I’m sorry, (laughing) I -– you’re like, “What? What the fuck did we come here for? This is bullshit.” (Billy stops guitar) Alright. Don’t worry, we’ll get back –- you’re like, “These guys aren’t saying anything and now they’re losing their minds.” (laughing) Alright, we’ll get back to the rock show.
BC: As seri –- heh, as serious as an endeavor as that was, now we’ll get serious. I love this part of the show because we get to thank everybody here, thank you so much for 35 years of music. Me and this uh...future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer –- but not as a rock musician, as a rapper -– this future hall of famer right here, we started this band 35 years ago. We never in a million years would imagine we’d be down in your beautiful country playing so many years later with such wonderful audiences, thank you for such a warm reception. You really make us proud, you make so proud. So we’d like to dedicate this song to everybody here, it’s a little song we like to call Tonight, Tonight.
Tonight, Tonight (Billy/Iha acoustic)
Iha: Sorry about that bad rap, that bad chicken salt rap. Uh, I’d like to introduce the band. One of your own, all the way from Melbourne, Miss Katie Cole. Katie Cole. Katie, would you like to address Melbourne?
Katie: Oh yeah. I know you just –- you just sang along to an incredible rap with James just now, but how about we sing a little bit of the real Australian national anthem and give some healing prayers to Mr. John Farnham. You wanna sing a little bit of the chorus with me of You’re the Voice?
Iha: I saw a poster of Mr. Farnham today...out....
Katie: Yeah, he’s, he’s, he’s our king. Alright, here, let’s, let’s do it, you ready?
You’re the Voice (tease - 1x through chorus acapella)
Katie: Thank you guys.
Iha: Thank you, Miss Katie Cole. All the way from Manchester, England, Mr. Jack Bates. Jack, would you like to fuck around on the bass?
unknown (tease - Jack)
Iha: One of Manchester’s own. (Jack finishes) Nice, nice one. And now, from Hollywood, California, the place I’m sure you all love, Mr. Jeff Schroeder. Jeff, would you like to rip some hot riff off?
Welcome to the Jungle (tease - Jeff)
Iha: Ha! Nice. (Jeff finishes) Ha! Awesome. From Illinois, on the drums, Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin! Jimmy, would you like to rock one or have you rocked enough already?
Whole Lotta Rosie (tease - Billy begins and Jimmy joins in)
Iha: Gonna tell you a story. About a woman I know. You know what I’m sayin’, I don’t know the words. (tease ends)
BC: He’s gotta sing about fuckin’ chicken salt!
Iha: That happens once a night. On the vocals and hot guitar, Mr. Billy Corgan. I’m James Iha, thank you so much, this is called Cherub Rock.
Cherub Rock
> Zero
> Love Gun (tease)
1979
Beguiled
> Silverfuck
(BC immediately after final lyrics: Melbourne, we love you, we love you!!)
Iha: Thank you so much! Thank you so much, Melbourne. Have a good night, get home safe.
