We Are PIGS is headed by South African producer and songwriter Esjay Jones. The band was formed as a self-described "nu-metal revival" project that collaborated with other high-profile artists dating back to April 2020. Jones first started writing the song "PIGS" in 2018 when she was living in South Africa and playing with a different band. The guitarist of that band had been a finalist in a Smashing Pumpkins cover song contest and was flown to Chicago. As Jones told Revolver magazine, "There [the guitarist] met our dear and late friend Bjorn Thorsrud, who became the catalyst for Billy adding his genius to and finally finishing this song." "PIGS" was released on January 27, 2023 in tribute to Thorsrud, who passed in October 2021.
