Banter[edit | edit source]
Sunny Sun-Downer: Hey everybody, welcome to Pioneertown. Let's hear it for yourselves for showin' up. My name's Sunny Sun-Downer and uh, I put on a show here with Sky Saxon five years ago with his - at the time - version of the Seeds. Anybody know who Sky Saxon is? That’s what I like to hear. Got a Sky “Sunlight” Saxon shrine set up over here. Just come and...take a minute to, you know, sit in silence with Sky and his spirit because that, every person that does that will bring him in closer to this mandala that he’s a part of because he was here. Just like the Dalai Lama, I don’t mean to get spiritual - too spiritual on you but for the Dalai Lama, when he goes somewhere physically, he lays in a field of energy and Sky did that here on Valentine’s Day 2004 and um, it’s coming back to life tonight. I was amazed by Billy Corgan and his friends performing Spirits in the Sky two weeks ago - did that tribute to Sky at the Echoplex. Anybody was at the Echoplex on July 25th? Woo! Alright, I’m gonna tell you real quick while they’re tuning up how Sky met Billy Corgan and Kerry Brown. They were at the Bodhi Tree bookstore in L.A., if you’ve been there. They happened upon a book on the Source Family and uh, they got ahold of Sky and [unintelligible name] and [unintelligible name] from the Source Family. Isis put the book together and you guys, check out the Source Family on the internet, you will have your mind blown. And that’s, uh, you can read on the Smashing Pumpkins website about how Sky and his Source Family turned on these guys to Ya Ho Wha and uh, you know, very spiritual things happened. So um, I got some CDs left over from five years ago, believe it or not, that Sky gave me and I’m gonna give ‘em to, right now real quick, who can tell me the name of one Seeds song, Sky “Sunlight” Saxon song that Spirit in the Sky played at the Echoplex. No, not, no no, the Seeds played Pushin’ Too Hard, but Spirits in the Sky played a song had to do - but we called it back in the ‘70s, we called it Bali. 900 people, Bali, nobody knows it, huh? Not even this town, we don’t care. How ‘bout the name of the spiritual group that Sky turned Billy Corgan on to? You guys are too stoned, did you pay attention to what I said a minute ago? How ‘bout a song that I performed here at a Sky Saxon tribute a month ago that’s now in a deodorant commercial without - hahahaha, Axe deodorant commercial and Sky and his family are not getting a cent for it? You go to YouTube and do a search on “Bettie Page dances to the Seeds” and you’ll hear what song? Starts with a C. Ho! Where are you, where are you? Come up here, get this CD, honey, Can’t Seem to Make You Mine by Sky Saxon and the Seeds. Come on and work your way up here real quick while I think of the next song. What song - our next giveaway question is what song by the Seeds, Sky Saxon and the Seeds, is in that movie called Taking Woodstock? Anybody seen it yet? Ow, Ang Lee did a great job, man, my ‘64 Dodge was in the background of the scene where the hippies, uh, cops wanna beat up the hippies and got nothing. (Billy has started playing his guitar in the middle of the last sentence and continues for the rest of the intro, joined by other members of the band) Wrong, wrong, wrong. It was a song on - they played it! - Kevin Dippold played it on the sound system. Two words, starts with a N. Anybody know the soundtrack from Taking Woodstock, no? Come on, somebody’s real problems, there’s too much [unintelligible] out there. No, what? Not No Release, come on. Anyway, I wrote an article about Sky Saxon and Billy Corgan meeting up with Dave Navarro and everybody. Desert Valley Star, you can get it in the coffeehouse. Looks like I get to give this...to my girlfriend. Alright, you guys, let’s hear it for Spirits in the Sky. Billy Corgan, Dave Navarro, Kevin Dippold, Linda Strawberry, Ysanne--did I say that right? Uh, Kerry Brown, Matt from Strawberry Alarm Clock, Mark Tulin from Electric Prunes: Spirits in the Sky! Woo!! Thanks, [unintelligible]! Woo!
> Can’t Seem to Make You Mine (abandoned after a few seconds - seems like somebody's not quite ready)
Can’t Seem to Make You Mine
Kerry Brown: I need some vocal in the drum mic.
BC: Yeah, a little more geetar in the back and a little vocal. Thank you very much, thank you.
Circular Change
Emerald Green is the Colour
BC: Thank you very much, thank you. ... So anyway....
Guy in crowd: Woo, Dave, woo!!
BC: Yeah. I’m just glad it still works. Whatever that is, I’m glad it works. So uh, this is our fourth show. (taps mic twice) That’s really loud in the--I think over here, Paul. 1-2. It might be awesome out there...up here, we’re having some issues. Uh, heh heh. We’ll get there, we’ll get there eventually. Um, is--that’s really loud, right?, [trails off].
Linda Strawberry: It’s okay.
Guy in crowd: [unintelligible word], we love you!
BC: I love you too. Uh...so we’ve been doing a little audience participation on this song, yeah. Pioneertown. Riiiight. We get down like the miners, yeah. You know this. Gold rush. Uh, anyway. Heh heh heh. So I’m gonna teach you this song, sing along if you like. Okay, here’s how it goes, you’ll be tested. You don’t wanna see that side of me if you don’t get it right.
Guy in crowd: Leave your hat off!
BC: When dudes want me to take the hat off, that scares me, okay? Girls, I understand. Dudes, I don’t get that. Alright, it goes like this.
Widow Wake My Mind (abandoned after 6th “oh”)
BC: If I was Freddie Mercury, okay, you would be so fucked right now.
Widow Wake My Mind
Mark Tulin: Can we have the vocals down in the back monitor please?
BC: Yeah, we got some feedin’ back action, there we go, look at that, hey, feedback, I love it. Yeah, feedback! Yeaah. Ironically, that’s the title of an Electric Prunes album: Feedback. Now they all [1-2 unintelligible words] stoners. Hello. Hello. Hello. What is--what is going on? Paul? Mr. Paul?
Guy in crowd: Free Kevin! Free Kevin!
BC: Free Kevin?
Guy in crowd: He went to jail for no reason!
BC: I don’t know who Kevin is. Does anyone know who Kevin is? Was it a weed related incident? I just hate the weed related incident. It happens. I believe that was a Seeds album title. Okay, let’s try this again.
Another guy in crowd: Happy birthday, Mikey!
BC: This is not the public announcement part of the show, okay, okay? You know, the Pioneer food drive, [unintelligible word] food drive, is a.... Yes. That’s what happens when you’re alternative, you just don’t care. That’s why I’m alternative. Anyway, this is a song--technically, you’re not on the west coast literally but figuratively you are--and this is a song about being on the west coast.
West Coast
BC: As Sky’s brother Sunny said, us being here has a lot to do with Sky. And uh, this is a song that has a lot to do with Sky. Sky believed in his causes. To live life, live free.
Girl in crowd: Anarchy!
BC: To continue to--well, I don’t know if it was anarchy, close to anarchy. Heh heh, heh, there was an order in there. Only he understood. (strumming guitar) Oh my god, I gotta tune. Does anyone know how to tune a guitar? And uh.... There’s a man over here...Anthony. You know the cartoons where there’s like a turkey? Or no, somebody’s hungry and then the person turns into a turkey? I think when Anthony looks at me, I turn into a wind-up monkey where I just do his bidding. First, I’ll be saying happy birthday to his sister and then I’ll be killing indiscriminately. Yeah, it all starts with the weed. Okay, speaking of weed, this is for Sky.
Freak
BC: Thank you, thank you.
Morning Dew
BC: Thank you. That was a song, uh--I don’t know who wrote that song, but the Grateful Dead I know did it, but...you may not have heard of them.
Guy in crowd: She's just made to roam.
BC: (shrugs) I don’t know about that. Right now, Sky and Jerry are jammin'. Heh heh. Somewhere up there, man, they just...jammin.’
Another guy in crowd: Not on the same song.
BC: (laughing) Not on the same song. Yeah, I’d like to play a new song I just wrote recently.
Another guy in crowd: Alright, Billy! Billy Corgan!
BC: Why do people need to shout my name when I’m here?
Yet another guy in crowd: Billy Corgan!
BC: You know that’s not my real name, okay, so.... If you knew anything, you’d know my name is Alabaster. Alabaster of the ethers. And I’m just jammin’ with Jerry and everything. Alright, this song called The Fellowship.
The Fellowship
Guy in crowd: Play some Pumpkins, guys!
BC: There’s so many here yelling for Pumpkins. Whoa, yeah, yeah. Here’s your Pumpkins, okay, ready?
Today (tease - first 5 notes)
> Bullet with Butterfly Wings (tease - 3 seconds)
> The Beautiful People (tease - first 5 notes)
BC: Thank you. Yeah, that’s the way it’s gonna be, man.
The Time Has Come (Billy solo)
Girl in crowd: I wanna rock that sexy bald head!
BC: Yeah, that’s right.
A Stitch in Time (Billy acoustic / Spevack violin / Dippold mandolin)
BC: And by the way, that is a Smashing Pumpkins song, okay? That’s right, that's right, I ride ‘em. I break ‘em, I ride ‘em like a bronco. What’s the next song? Heh heh heh. Do I know this one? Yeaaah, come on. ...
Guy in crowd: Billy!
BC: Yeah. I am real, I am here. I do exist, that’s right. I am here, I’m right here, I’m right here, I’m right...here. Hello, hello, hello, hello.
Caroline, Yes (Billy acoustic / Spevack violin / Dippold mandolin)
BC: That would be a Smashing Pumpkins song. This is another Smashing Pumpkins song. Yeah, awesome. When I was a young boy, you know, I thought “One day I’m gonna grow up and do what people want me to do. That’s it, that’s what I wanna do! Do what people want me to do, it’s gonna be awesome.” Yeaah. Heh heh heh.
A Song for a Son (Billy acoustic / Spevack violin / Dippold mandolin)
Kerry Brown: (taking pic or video of the crowd) I gotta Twitter this up, so.... Thank you for Twittering with us tonight, hold on. (gesturing for the crowd to put their hands up) Give us up, like you like, yeah, one of these, yeah.
The Trip
Astral Planes
BC: The uh, the drummer boys are getting killed by guitar. Let’s take it waaay, heh, way down.
Femme Fatale
A New Day
Lucifer Sam
BC: Thank you!
[encore break]
Kerry Brown: Is there a Dave Navarro in the house? [unintelligible]
funk jam
(BC: Alright, enough of this funk bullshit.)
Long Haired Lady
BC: Thanks a lot, thank you.
