BC: Alright. Is that why it’s quiet? Okay. This is the dreaded audience participation moment to explain to you. I figured it works for Green Day, I’m gonna start trying it. They’re doing okay right about now. And uh, heh heh heh.

BC: Aw no, I like me some Green Day. They’ve matured into um.... No, they’re good, no, they’re good. Actually, I hate most bands and I actually like Green Day, so.... I can’t believe I’m saying that. Heh heh, no, they’re good, honestly though. Okay. We’ll talk about who I don’t like after [unintelligible word or two]. Wouldn’t wanna end up on YouTube now. (testing guitar) See, while I was talking, I should’ve been tuning. That’s a lesson for your life right there. Okay, ready, it’s pretty simple. (demonstrates the oh’s and abruptly stops) You guys are “Wait, shit, man.” Come on. This ain’t gonna get me back to the arena, ready?

(Billy is gesturing with his face for the audience to start singing)

BC: As you can see, we’re very well rehearsed. Who actually in here goes to college, I’d like to know that. Okay, just wanna let you know there’s no future, give it up. BC: Me? I’ve found through the years audiences don’t really care how I’m doing. I’m just going on the average, okay, you know what I mean? Yeah, they all said that. They all say they care until they don’t get a picture or an autograph, then they don’t care anymore. (audience aw’s) That’s right, it’s a hard life, man. It’s tough out there. Heh heh. It’s rough!

BC: Yeah. Thank you. It was a tough drive down from Palm Springs. (strumming) Oh my god. Sorry, we’re just having all sorts of problems. Let’s just talk for a while while I do this. Okay. Anything anyone would like to know?

BC: I’m sorry?

BC: Well, I don’t really get into the myth of Che Guevara, okay, so I’m not down with that, okay? I can roll with Bob Marley and uh...you know what I mean? I don’t know who Che Guevara is. It’s a stretch for me, okay.
Guy in crowd: What bands do you not like?
BC: What bands do...? Uh. What bands don’t I like?
Guy in crowd: What do you think of Eddie Vedder?
BC: Isn’t he from San Di--oh wait, he’s from Chicago. Yeah, he was a Chicagoan before he was a surfer, before he was a grunge superstar. Isn’t that how it works?
Guy on stage off mic: Chickyville.
BC: He’s from Chick--Chickyville. We are happy to be in La Jolla (pronounced incorrectly with hard “j”). Did you know I’m from Chickyville? It’s a real pleaseure [sic] to be here. This song is about the devastation of the west coast and all that embodies, you know what I’m talking about.
West Coast
BC: Spirits in the Sky, um, is named after Sky Saxon and the Seeds. Anyone know Sky? Seeds, anybody? If you get a chance, check out Sky Saxon. Sky was one of the pioneers of uh, punk and psychedelic music in the ‘60s and had a huge influence on a lot of bands that came after, including Green Day. And uh, Sky was our brother and he recently passed away and so we did a--the reason we even started playing together like this was, um, we played a benefit--well, not a benefit, a memorial--no one benefited. And uh, so this is a song we dedicate to Sky, so this is called Freak.

Guy off mic: Can you just mention that the front of the house that doesn’t feel as off?

BC: Thank you, that’s a song by Anne Briggs. I highly recommend to anybody, no, not that you’re gonna remember, but....

BC: You’re lucid, you’re in college, sure. Anne Briggs, a English folk singer from the early ‘70s. Huge influence, I agree there. Wore flannel, Vedder. You see where this is all going. Actually, it was her that developed the (makes noise), the Vedder (same noise) that all led to all the man rock, (same noise). It started with Anne Briggs, you might wanna check it out. She actually doesn’t sing the song that’s more than a (same noise). Oh wait, in the Pumpkins, that’s what you call the man voice, which obviously I’m lacking. Yeah. I know, it’s been rough. ‘Cause the man voice seems to attract the big bucks and the chicks. Look at Nickelback. Lots of hits, lots of chicks. Just do the math, you’re in school. Okay, here we go.

BC: That’s a really good band, man. I think it’s good that bands are influenced by the band, all these [unintelligible]. I mean, I’ve, I’ve, I’ve, I’ve, I was influenced by tons of people.
Guy in crowd: But they said you sound the same.
BC: That’s not fair to anybody. Okay, in the beginning of the band, we used to be compared to the Black Crowes, R.E.M., um...uh....

BC: No, we didn’t get that ‘til later. Until after I said they were an influence, then we were compared. Nah, that the whole thing’s bullshit.
Another guy in crowd: What are you listening to these days?
BC: The voices in my head.

BC: To kill you. Luckily for you, I don’t listen. Yeah. They do tell me to sing in the man voice though. The voices are like, (Satanic voice) “If you sing in the man voice, you will get more money, more hits, more chicks.” (normal voice) And then they’re like, (Satanic voice) “Kill Scott. Kill Scott. He’s right there. Destroy him.” (normal) By the way, totally random thought, the actor name--is it Shee-ah LaBoof, Bloof?

BC: Okay. Why is that guy a movie star? I mean, never met him, but why is that, why am I watching him fight the Transformers? I don’t get that. I don’t, heh heh. Heh, I really don’t. (Satanic voice) “Kill.” (normal) Oh my god. Heh, that’ll end up on YouTube. Heh, heh, heh heh. That’s right. I got a brain in there somewhere. Alright, this is a song called A Song for a Son.
