Pony Express
Ring the Bells
BC: Thank you very much, thank you.
Lady in crowd: Can you sing Happy Birthday to Omar?
BC: I’m sorry?
Lady in crowd: Can you say Happy Birthday to Omar? He’s your biggest fan.
BC: Where’s Omar? No, really, you’re not Omar, I know Omar, you’re not Omar. I’m sorry, happy birthday, Omar. Let’s all sing Happy Birthday to Omar.
Happy Birthday
(BC changes last line: (singing) It will be the last you ever have.)
BC: Just kidding, just kidding.
Candy Came Calling
For Your Love
BC: Thank you very much, thank you very much. It’s very nice to be here with you tonight, thank you, thank you Swimming in Coal.
Revolve
BC: I’m not used to this cold, you’ll have to excuse me.
Guy in crowd: Too much time in L.A.
BC: Ahhhhhhhhh.
Sweeney: (surfer voice) Yeah. Hangin’ out with Cameron Diaz and fuckin’ Billy [unintelligible], doin’ cocaine.
BC: Yeah, back when we had no money and grunge, you know, we didn’t hangin’ out, and of course now, we all have mansions.
Other guy in crowd: Comedy doesn't pay, Billy!
BC: Nor does alternative rock.
El-A-Noy
Sweeney: Yes it has, actually. Well, I mean, we used to hook it up there, uh, from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, this place in New York. It’s a great, great story.
BC: They don’t live in New York, Matt.
Sweeney: What?
BC: They don’t live in New York.
Sweeney: Oh, yeah, they can’t get the hats then.
BC: They’re not cool like you.
Sweeney: Uh, we’ll try to arrange something like that in the hats, we’ll make an arrangement, talk to Billy.
Roma Girl
Guy in crowd: I love you!
BC: Thank you. I need all the love I can get. Especially from men. It’s been a male deficient kind of love kind of life. And quite frankly, the love I’ve gotten from women has sort of freaked me out so...maybe a little bit, maybe a little bit more man love would help. Maybe me and you could go out after the show and build a fire and just stand around and tell stories. I could tell you about the time I lost my virginity to Jethro Tull and you could tell me...about your father and his [unintelligible as Sweeney talks over him]....
Sweeney: Was it really - it was Thick as a Brick, it was that song?
BC: Yeah. It was.
Sweeney: Wow!
Solace and Serenity
BC: Huh? What do you want?
God’s Gonna Set This World on Fire (abandoned pretty quickly)
BC: Am I wrong?, I’m in the wrong key. Sorry. Sorry about that.
God’s Gonna Set This World on Fire
Guy #1 in crowd: I love Jesus!
BC: He’s a man. ... Because of the quiet nature of these kind of shows, we normally set aside time during every show for everyone used to yell stupid shit so now is the time. It’s r - it’s right here on the setlist: “Yell stupid shit.” Pretend - “Yell stupid shit, pretend you don’t hear what they’re saying and don’t react.” Matt’s very sensitive to these things.
Guy #2 in crowd: 1979!
Sweeney: Awww.... (crowd boos) You’re the first, the nine, that’s the first time.
BC: Like I - like I said, it’s time to yell stupid shit. Oh, oh, I’m sorry, it’s time for dumb motherfuckers to yell stupid shit. But I love you, man, I love you. Genetics - genetics can be cruel.
Freedom Ain’t What It Used to Be
> The Number of the Beast
The Spy Tra La
(Sweeney is doodling on his guitar for a bit, Billy and Pajo join in)
Sweeney: That’s a brand new riff, I just wrote it.
(jamming continues)
BC: Then it stops and goes (plays guitar similar to Wipe Out and Jimmy joins in for 10 seconds). And then you scream and then....
Careless Love
BC: Like to play one more song for you. Thank you very much for coming tonight, we really appreciate it. You know, when we uh, when we first went to book some Zwan shows, some people expressed doubt that anyone would come to a band that doesn’t have an album and no one knows the songs, no one knows who’s in the band, but.... (large crowd cheer) So we thank you very much, we thank you for your faith in us, thank you. We’d now like to play a song by our other band, the True Poets of Zwan.
Girl in crowd: I love them!
BC: This is called - yes, I do too - and this is called And So I Died of a Broken Heart.
Of a Broken Heart
BC: Thank you! Thank you, thank you.
[encore break]
Silly Sally
(BC over outro reprise: We are Zwan. (Southern accent) Like to thank y’all for comin’ tonight. It always gives us great pleasure to see your purdy faces. And some of you, your long legs. Goodnight.)
