Banter[edit | edit source]
Pony Express
Ring the Bells
Candy Came Calling
BC: Thank you very much, thank you.
Guy #1 in crowd: Don’t Let Me Down!
Guy #2 in crowd: Billy, I’m pregnant!
BC: I promise I’ll pay for the baby.
For Your Love
Guy #1 in crowd: Don’t Let Me Down!
Sweeney: Dude! We’re gonna let you down, we’re not gonna play it. (same guy was yelling for the song during the early show)
How Things Are Supposed to Be
BC: Okay, thank you very much. We’d like to uh, we’d like to invite you to participate in this next song. Okay, any uh, when I sing this first line, you have to sing, “One of these days,” okay, so, here’s the test, right? (sings the melody of “god’s gonna set this world on fire” without actually singing the words) (singing) One of these days, one of these days.
Sweeney: He likes the rhythm. One of these days!
BC: Alright. Okay, so, let’s try it. (sings the melody again while clapping), one of these days, (sings melody), one of these days, (sings melody), one of these days. (keeps clapping while audience sings their line) No, you gotta sing better than that. (singing) One of these days - (speaking) thank you! (starts song)
God’s Gonna Set This World on Fire
BC: Thank you very much, thank you.
Wasting Time
Girl in crowd: Billy, I love you!
BC: Many have claimed love but few have delivered.
Guy in crowd: Billy, I love you!
BC: I’ve written a special song just for you that we’re gonna play later...lover man. I’m gonna dedicate that song to you when we get there.
El-A-Noy
BC: Hold on a second.
Freedom Ain’t What It Used to Be
The Number of the Beast
Roma Girl
Sweeney: Jimmy! They’re totally into you. They’re so into you.
Guy in crowd: Nice beard, Jimmy!
BC: Did you say you’re glad Jimmy’s your beard?
Guy in crowd: When are we getting a Jimmy song?!
BC: Who’s the guy who keeps yelling out? Can you raise your hand, please? It’s okay, I promise, who’s the guy who keeps yelling out?
Guy in crowd: It’s me back here!
BC: No, there’s a “drum solo” guy and there’s a “Jimmy, I love you” guy, where’s the “Jimmy, I love you” guy? Come on. Nothing bad’s gonna happen to you.
Sweeney: It’s all guys.
BC: It’s the guy with the green hair. Um, Jimmy just said uh, if you shut the fuck up, he’ll give you twenty dollars.
My Dream
BC: One two. For the guy yelling “drum solo,” Jimmy said it’s okay, you can give him a blowjob later. And you don’t have to pay twenty bucks.
W.P.
BC: Thanks a lot. We’d like to play one more song. It’s a surprisingly sad song. I just get on a roll, you know, it’s.... I take this moment to thank you very much for coming tonight. We feel very blessed by your presence. Like to give a shout out to Zwan proper: Matt, David and Jimmy. I’m very happy to have you in my world and my cards.
Guy in crowd: Then don’t go!
BC: I wasn’t talking about you, I was talking about them. You will have to leave.
Sweeney: And uh, thanks to Sleeping at Last.
The Spy Tra La
BC: Thank you.
[encore break]
Sweeney: [tape cuts in] I don’t know how many of you folks in Grand Rapids know this, but Billy’s got a house right down the street and there’s a huge fucking rager tonight at Billy’s house.
BC: No, I got in trouble once for doing that. Now, we were playing in uh...if you wanna hear the story, I don’t know, that’s okay.
Sweeney: Alright, tell ‘em, tell ‘em, they’re fans.
BC: Now you wanna hear the story, Matt? I’ll just tell it to you. So we were playing in Oklahoma City and uh - with my former band and uh, and uh...the Dave Matthews Band - and uh, we were in Oklahoma City and we were staying at a hotel right across from where we were playing and we played some huge humongous place like nine thou-, hundred thousand people or something and uh, I thought it was funny, um, because we were staying on this floor where you needed a key to get upstairs in the elevator. So during the middle of the show, I said, “By the way, after the show, there’s a party in James Iha’s room” and uh, and I figured, you know, like 20 people maybe would go over. Well, it turns out like a thousand - a thousand people went over to the hotel and then they went and rushed past the security guards and they went up the elevator and when the elevator wouldn’t go to the floor where his room was, they stopped the elevator, they climbed through the top, broke through the - the top floor and destroyed the entire floor. And of course, they called me and said, uh, “We want you to pay for this.”
Sweeney: Those days are gone. No more Enormo Domes. Just us. Just us guys. All I need is music and my pals really.
BC: We’d like to play a song by our other band, Zwan, True Poets of Zwan. This is called And So I Died of a Broken Heart.
Of a Broken Heart
BC: It’s this girl right here’s birthday, Jimmy. She wants a drumstick. We don’t have any, I’m sorry.
Chicks
(BC at beginning: Okay, we just wrote this song on the way up here.
Sweeney: This is true, we were talking about uh...the four of us were in a car...and when somehow the subject came up about how we all enjoy each other's company, as men we enjoy each other's company. And then somebody said, yeah, chicks just get in the way. And then these guys, in between - in between the first set and this set, they came up with this little number...which I will have nothing to do with.
BC: Come on, a little help. (clapping) Alright, never mind, it’s alright, never mind. Stop.
Sweeney: They’re rushin’, it’s like Ronnie James Dio in that Rainbow video tape when he tells the crowd, “Don’t rush,” that’s the thing.)
(BC after 2nd chorus: Okay, this is a very - the ending’s very important.)
(BC after 3rd chorus: We've got to do the ending again, Jimmy.)
BC: God bless you, thank you very much.
