Frontman Benjamin Burnley said the experience working with Corgan was one the highlights of his career. "I wanted the band to sound different, and the best way to do that was to get Billy", he told Rolling Stone. In an interview with MTV, he elaborated: "At first, I was so nervous. When I met him I was like, 'Oh shit, that's Billy Corgan.' But after a while I got more comfortable, and then he just became Billy. I'd come in every day, we'd order soup, eat and then we'd get to work. It was great."
We Are Not Alone sold 48,000 copies in its first week and was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA. It peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200 and also made the 2004 year-end chart, placing at #160. Fueled by the success of the "Rain" single, the album also made the 2005 year-end chart, placing at #119. In New Zealand, the album peaked at #14 and was certified Gold.
