Corgan told EQ: "The song was our way of saying ‘fuck you’ to all those people who thought we’d somehow lost our minds and weren't able to return home. We were in the studio for what appeared to be the last time, so it was very emotional, and we had only three days."
Just prior to the SP's penultimate show at the United Center in Chicago, they debuted the song by presenting it to Q101, calling it a "sort of special see-ya-later song". Q101 gave away the single copy that was given to them by Corgan, which featured the Rotten Apples artwork.
An official European single was issued by Virgin with alternate versions of "Try, Try, Try" and "Age of Innocence". There is only one known official mix of the song released on promotional acetate in the US, known as the 'Pop Mix'.
Corgan stated that "Untitled" intentionally sounds more like Gish and Siamese Dream, and that SP could always produce music that sounded like their older albums, but chose instead to try new directions. The chain for Corgan's solo, what he considered among his favorites, features a DOD FX84 Milk Box compressor and a Shin-Ei Companion Fuzz Wah.
The Smashing Pumpkins were asked to provide "Untitled" as the soundtrack to the final scene to the film Shrek, but the offer was ultimately withdrawn and given to Smash Mouth for their cover of The Monkees "I'm a Believer". This sparked a feud with Smash Mouth, but Corgan insisted no hard feelings, adding "Facts are facts. And the fact that we were pushed aside for what became a big hit for them is hardly a diss on the other side."
Two music videos were released. The first was an edited collage of footage of the band from 1988 to 2000, and was only released through TV and online content providers in the late summer of 2001. A second one was released as an easter egg on the band's Greatest Hits Video Collection, and simply had footage of the band recording the song at the Chicago Recording Company. Stills from this footage were used on the cover of the European single. The video was directed by Bart Lipton.
