Jeff Schroeder met Mindy Song through a mutual friend in 2015. They decided to convene in a Chicago studio to "see where things might go". The session was a success, and the duo relocated to their hometown of Los Angeles to record Treasure with producer Josiah Mazzasch, who has previously worked with bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Built To Spill.
Schroeder told Consequence: "In past situations, my role would be to come up with riffs or guitar parts and bring them to the band, and the singer would complete it from there. With Mindy we both have very different skill sets, but we're able to work together and create something new out of that. She's an amazing musician and has this voice where she can sing really pretty but also make it really gritty sometimes, and I love the way that sound melds with my guitar."
The album features guest bass guitar by Jack Bates, the touring bassist for The Smashing Pumpkins. The co-producer and engineer Josiah Mazzaschi was a member of the band Light FM, as was former Pumpkins bassist Nicole Fiorentino. Night Dreamer debuted the EP with a listening party at the Museum of Dream Space in Beverly Hills, featuring sound and light projections.
The Cutaway wrote that Treasure offers a "pleasant sense of urgency" with its "dark overtures, heavy hooks, and apocalyptic dreamscapes," adding that "Schroeder and Song's transcendent songwriting and determination transform their musical visions from fantasy to hyperreality."
