Corgan said "Thirty-Three" was a "a simple song in a country tuning" and was the first song written after the Rock Invasion tour. The drum machine track is exactly the same track Corgan recorded when he laid down the demo version because he "couldn't remember how to recreate it." He also explained that the "stringly sounds" in the recording are a vocoder with five slide guitars, each tuned to a single note to create the chords. As for the title, Corgan explained on VH1 Storytellers (then 33 years old) that when he was 27, a tarot card reading told him his life would completely change at the age of 33.
The cover artwork is a rendering of Grigori Rasputin's face, with Vladimir Lenin's face towards the bottom-left.
The music video was directed by Corgan and then-girlfriend Yelena Yemchuk. Its a series of images shot in stop-motion, ending with a re-enactment of the Mellon Collie cover. Because the group's videos often avoided literal interpretation of lyrics, the video was created with images closely related to the words of the song, as an intentional stylistic departure.
The US/UK maxi singles along with The Aeroplane Flies High included the B-side "The Last Song", which featured a guitar solo by Corgan's father, William Corgan Sr. "The Last Song" was performed live in full only once at the farewell show at the Metro on December 2, 2000.
"Thirty-Three" peaked at #39 on the US Hot 100 and at #2 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. It was a #1 hit on the UK Rock/Metal chart and reached #7 on New Zealand's national chart. In Canada, it reached #2 on the RPM Rock/Alt chart and coincidentally at #33 for the year-end chart for 1997. Despite being one of SP's four top 40 national hits in the US, the song was not featured on the Rotten Apples greatest hits compilation.
The song has been performed live roughly 239 times in full, most recently at Together and Together Again benefit at Madame ZuZu's in July 2022.
