The reference and apology to Matt Damon is a running joke on the show, but Damon is reportedly a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan who attended the December 2, 2000 farewell show in Chicago.

The Smashing Pumpkins would perform for Jimmy Kimmel again almost exactly 4 years later on December 11, 2018.
