On November 17, 2000, The Smashing Pumpkins made their final televised performance before breaking up, appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. To a roaring studio audience, the band did two takes of "Cash Car Star", and the first was broadcast.
Jay Leno introduced the band holding a vinyl copy of Machina II (it's unclear if it was an actual copy or a prop, given only 25 are known to exist). He joked that it's "the biggest CD I've ever seen."
After the performance, Leno asks Billy Corgan "why are you guys breaking up?" Corgan replies "comedy doesn’t pay, Jay." Leno later hands him a Billy Corgan action figure (first picture), saying "We made this as a tribute." Corgan replies "He looks like he's having a better time than me, though."
Corgan would return to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2005 in support of his debut solo album TheFutureEmbrace, and The Smashing Pumpkins would return to the show in 2010 and 2012.
