"On the hottest day of the year, in the coolest city in the country, the biggest band in the world played a surprise show" ~ Ari Bendersky, Rolling Stone magazine
June 23, 1997 saw The Smashing Pumpkins perform a sold out surprise show at the legendary 473-capacity Double Door in Chicago. The band, featuring @mwbattery on drums, were billed as 'Audio Vanguard Association'. The Frogs opened with a set of Smashing Pumpkins covers, before the Pumpkins hit the stage at exactly 10:15 PM. Members of Filter, Pearl Jam and Cupcakes were in attendance. At times the crowd thrashed so hard that the floor bounced. As Rolling Stone detailed, "when Billy Corgan sang the line 'and the embers never fade in your city by the lake,' from "Tonight, Tonight," not only did the crowd erupt with excitement knowing Corgan was singing about Chicago, but the singer himself was beaming with smiles."
This show is especially notable as featuring the live debuts of "Eye", "The End Is the Beginning Is the End", "Transformer", and an instrumental cover of "Glimpses" by The Yardbirds.
