August 23, 1996 was the first Smashing Pumpkins performance following the death of touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and Jimmy Chamberlin's subsequent departure from the band. The touring band featured two new additions that would remain for the rest of the tour: Matt Walker of Filter on drums and Dennis Flemion of The Frogs on keyboards. Jimmy Flemion (also of The Frogs) guested at nearly every show as well.
The show was a 1 P.M. matinee that took place at Metro in Chicago to the usual ~1,100 capacity. This show is notable as featuring the live debut of "The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right)". Chamberlin had recorded the drums for the studio recording while the band was on tour in Australia earlier that year. Corgan finished the rest of the song in a single day some time during the summer. The studio recording was released the following November on the "Thirty-Three" single as well as The Aeroplane Flies High box set.
