The song was originally written and demoed for Monuments to an Elegy (2014), with Corgan noting: "Jeff and I were the only people in the band at that time and we just couldn't find the magic. We always thought the song was strong … the minute we put it in Jimmy Chamberlin's hands, it's like, 'Oh, there's the magic.' It got a lot easier after that."
Jeff Schroeder noted of the sessions: "I personally had a pretty touchy moment for myself in that I was sitting there tuning my guitar, and then I looked around and saw Billy, Jimmy, and James. And then I look through the window and see Rick Rubin, and I thought, “Wow. This is a really special moment.” To think that when I joined the band it was such a different scenario, that to even think 12 years later you'd be at this point, it was really unfathomable."
A music video directed by Nick Koenig was released on June 28, 2018, containing "classic horror imagery" where Corgan is "being held captive in an otherworldly asylum."
Billboard described the song's sound as a "chest-out rock song, loaded with grinding guitars, a pounding rhythm section and big fills." The song was described as having "chugging" and "stuttering" sounds in the verses building into a soaring and multi-layered chorus, with Corgan singing "Tear down the sun/Bring down the sun/I'm not everyone." It peaked at #22 on the US Rock Digital chart, #46 on Rock Airplay and at #47 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. It placed on the Canadian Rock chart at #30.
At roughly 152 plays, the song has been a staple at live shows since its debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in June 11, 2018.
