Swan met Billy Corgan not long after she released her debut solo album, Ladyland, in 2006. She was doing live work at Linda Perry's studio (producer of Ladyland), who was at the time working with Courtney Love, when Corgan came over to listen to her sing. Perry wrote of the sessions: "Beautiful, erotic, mesmerizing is everything that comes to mind when listening to Sierra Swan. Her voice will take you on an emotional journey." Swan and Corgan became good friends and briefly dated each other.
Swan first joined Corgan on stage at the final Spirits in the Sky show on October 31, 2009. On February 25, 2014, she released her album Good Soldier, which was produced by Corgan. Corgan later recalled, "There were a lot of reasons for me deciding to work with Sierra, but one of the biggest is her sheer talent. Quite simply, she has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard."
