SPCodex:Social media/Rotten Apples
This page defines the social media posts for Rotten Apples.
This post is scheduled to deliver on November 20 at 13:00 UTC.
NOTE: The structure must follow the guide at SPCodex:Social media exactly for the automated posts to work.
Two versions exist: one is exclusive to North America and includes the song "Landslide", which is replaced by "Try, Try, Try" in the international version. The album's concluding track, "Untitled", was the Pumpkins' final recording before their breakup, completed and released as a single in the days leading up to the farewell concert in Chicago. Another notable track is "Real Love"; while previously released on Machina II, this was taken from the factory master tapes and as a result, lacks the pops and clicks inherent in all copies of Machina II (which is vinyl sourced).
The album title is the namesake of a B-side released on the "Tonight, Tonight" single. The cover photo was taken by Lisa Johnson in 1991. At the time, Johnson and the band joked about the 'End' sign in the background and how the image could be used as the cover for a Greatest Hits album after they breakup.
Met with critical acclaim, BBC called Rotten Apples "a rare pleasure these days, a collection of tracks that span a band's career that can actually justify the Greatest Hits title." NME gave it 4/5 stars, opining it "defies normal Greatest Hits logic to actually sound like a proper, coherent album."
In limited quantities, Rotten Apples was packaged with a bonus disc of B-sides and outtakes titled Judas O. Initially released as free downloadable tracks by the band, the songs are largely from the Mellon Collie, Adore, and Machina sessions, and some tracks can be found on The Aeroplane Flies High and Machina II. Judas O is considered to be the sister album to 1994's Pisces Iscariot. The CD is designed to look like a CDR, possibly in reference to online trading communities.
Rotten Apples peaked at #31 in the US, #4 in Australia, #5 in Canada and New Zealand, and was a top 40 album in at least 9 other countries. It is certified Platinum in Canada and New Zealand and Gold in the US, UK, Spain and Australia.
