Billy Corgan wrote the song in Los Angeles during the November 1997-March 1998 sessions at Sunset Sound as a late addition to Adore. He explained that lyrically, the song was inspired by the breakup of a couple that he knew, and that "the lyric is meant as ironic, as little in love's affairs can be quantified as perfect." Joey Waronker provided drums, who was a session drummer for Beck and R.E.M.
There were several variants of the single. One UK release contained the James Iha-penned song "Summer" and a Nellee Hooper remix of "Perfect" (1st photo). Another had a Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osborne remix of "Perfect", and a Kerry Brown remix of "Daphne Descends" (2nd photo). There is also a CD containing five different remixes of the song, one of which charted at #19 on Canada's Dance/Urban chart. The US compact disc, released on October 6, 1998, contained "Summer" and Kerry Brown's mix of "Daphne Descends".
Upon release, "Perfect" received positive reviews. Rolling Stone notes that the song "picks up on the synth-pop echoes of the 1996 Pumpkins hit 1979." Feldman of website Musiccritic.com called the single "an irresistible slice of candy-coated pop" while website Rockmusicreview.com praised it for its "glimmering shine."
The song has been performed live roughly 223 times in full, debuting at the Billy Corgan acoustic set at the Viper Room in January 1998, and most recently performed by Corgan on NPR's World Cafe in December 2020.
"Perfect" peaked at #3 on the US Alternative Airplay chart, #33 on the Mainstream Rock chart and at #54 on the Billboard Hot 100. In Canada it reached #2 on the Rock/Alternative weekly chart, and ended 1998 at #20 on the year-end Rock/Alternative chart and at #78 on the Top Singles chart. The song was also a hit in Iceland (#17), New Zealand (#18), Scotland (#21), and the UK (#24).
