Sweeney's previous band, Skunk, was praised by Corgan in the Pisces Iscariot liner notes while discussing "Frail and Bedazzled": "frail and bedazzled owes a great debt to the band skunk, with whom i ripped part of this song off. skunk was probably the greatest band that i ever knew/saw that is virtually unknown-even less than the frogs. frogs. skunk. i miss skunk."
After joining Zwan, Sweeney recruited David Pajo to the band. He co-wrote "Mary Star of the Sea" with the rest of the band and sang on "The Number of the Beast", which was a B-side on the "Honestly" single and also appeared on the Spun soundtrack.
While Zwan was in the studio recording Mary Star of the Sea, Sweeney hosted a "secret" open mic every Monday at The Hideout in Chicago, called Jack Sweeney's Open Mic. There was belief Jack Sweeney was actually Matt Sweeney of Zwan, and rumors were confirmed at the debut event on September 9, 2002. Chicago-area musicians would sign up and play two-song sets every week, in between the two-song sets by varying combinations of Zwan members Corgan, Sweeney, Paz Lenchantin and David Pajo, with occasional performances by the full band.
According to SPCodex records, Sweeney first played with Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin when they sat in for the band Royal Bliss on May 10, 2001, with Bjorn Thorsrud also present. He then played all but one of the 108 shows Zwan performed between November 2001 and June 2003. The single show he missed was one of The Hideout shows.
In addition to Zwan and his first band Skunk, Sweeney has frontend the band Chavez since 1993. He also toured and recorded for Bonnie "Prince" Billy, toured with Iggy Pop, Josh Homme and Matt Helders, and helped assemble Dave Grohl's all-star metal project called Probot. His session work meanwhile led to him playing guitar on all of Neil Diamond's 2008 album, Home Before Dark.
