Iha wrote and sang a number of Smashing Pumpkins songs, such as: "Blew Away", "Bugg Superstar" (named after his former dog, Bugg), "Take Me Down", "Said Sadly", "Believe", "The Boy", "The Bells", "Summer" and "Go". With Corgan, he co-wrote "I Am One", "Soma", "Mayonaise", "Plume" and "Farewell and Goodnight".
Although often considered the "quiet one" in The Smashing Pumpkins, Iha is known to engage in ad-libbed jokes and rap sessions at live performances. His humor was encapsulated in his use of the catchphrase, "I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all," originally from the Bon Jovi song "Wanted Dead or Alive".
Iha has produced songs, contributed guitar and vocals, and produced remixes for many artists, including Ivy, Fountains of Wayne, Whiskeytown, Melissa Auf der Maur, Midnight Movies, Isobel Campbell, Michael Stipe and Scott Weiland. He co-owned Scratchie Records with Adam Schlesinger, and owned a recording studio with Schlesinger and Andy Chase called Stratosphere Sound.
James Iha has released two solo albums, Let It Come Down (1998) and Look to the Sky (2012). He has composed scores for several films and TV series such as The Tesseract, A History of Radness, Deadbeat, Linda Linda Linda, and The Arrangement. He also designs and consults for his mens clothing brand, Vaporize, for which he provided the original song "Never Ever" at their first runway show.
"Is everyone doing okay? We appreciate you making it out tonight through all the cold and bad weather though. We just flew in ourselves and uh, boy, are our arms tired." ~ Iha; Cincinnati, Ohio, 1997
