Skysaw included drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/songwriter Mike Reina and guitarist Anthony Pirog. They formed in 2009, when Reina and Pirog were fronting a Washington DC-based psych-pop ensemble called The Jackfields. Reina was introduced first to Chamberlin through a mutual acquaintance, and through him, Pirog.
After the release of Great Civilizations, the band performed live in 2011 with additional touring members, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Boris Skalsky and guitarist Paul Wood, both from the band Dead Heart Bloom.
AllMusic gave Great Civilizations 3.5/5 stars, calling it an "ambitious and sturdy psych- and prog rock-inflected debut," adding that it "registers less as a vanity project and more as a the work of a band of like-minded musicians with Chamberlin's propulsive whirl of rhythm set against memorable and sweeping pop epics."
On August 23, 2012 Jimmy Chamberlin revealed the dissolution of Skysaw.
