The album was recorded in Billy Corgan's private studio, most likely the space fans know as 'Pumpkinland II'. The album took all of two weeks to record. Long-term Smashing Pumpkins collaborator Bjorn Thorsrud, who passed away in October 2021, engineered and mixed the album, with mastering by Howie Weinberg. The track "I Feel" features backing vocals by British singer-songwriter Carina Round, whom both Swan and Corgan worked with on the 2015 remix album, Tigermixes.
At the time, Corgan had not produced for another artist for over a decade. "Generally speaking, I don't like producing. I feel like artists deserve their own version of record production, and my version is pretty particular," he told MusicRadar. He made an exception for Swan, saying "There were a lot of reasons for me deciding to work with Sierra, but one of the biggest is her sheer talent. Quite simply, she has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard."
MusicRadar called Good Soldier a "a rarity in current-day rock, a triumph of highly personal songwriting and minimalist sonic architecture that manages to connect with listeners without telegraphing emotions or overstating musical cues." The blog Audioeclectica wrote that "Sierra's voice is whimsical and takes you on quite a journey through her songs. She has one of the most pure voices in all of rock music."
