The song was originally called "Steam" because it reminded Corgan of a steam piston engine. The main riff was written on guitar and was the first to come out of the 2018 Shiny Vol. 1 sessions. This version involved heavy guitar, but Corgan and engineer Howard Willing decided it didn't fit on Shiny Vol. 1. The song was re-recorded for the CYR album in April-May 2019, entirely produced by Corgan, who attributed the revamped sound to the largely industrial Wax Trax! Records – a label influential to SP.
A teaser of the song appeared on Sumerian's IG account on August 25. The caption read "this friday is the biggest announcement in sumerian history. stare down your masters". Music recognition software prematurely identified the title as "Cyr". Cyr is a French name that comes from the Latin name "Cyricus" and ultimately from the Greek word "kyrios", which is usually translated as "lord" or "master", aligning with the mysterious caption and the lyrics.
A Linda Strawberry directed music video was also released the same day as the single. It was filmed while the band was in lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic. The video stars burlesque performer and model, Mosh, who also starred in the "Ramona" video as well as Shiny Vol. 1 vignettes. By September 1, the video had racked up 1 million views. Jimmy Chamberlin's dance moves became a favorite among fans, and was dubbed the #jimmyshimmy on social media.
Both "Cyr" and its companion "The Colour of Love" received positive reviews. Consequence described "Cyr" as "a dance anthem that sounds like Adore meets ABBA", and "The Colour of Love" as an "all the midnight anthems within 2000's Machina". They added that both "hearken back to Billy Corgan's salad days, back when he worshipped The Cure on FM radio".
"Cyr" peaked at #19 on the US Alternative Airplay chart.
