Bye Bye Blackbird released May 27, 2016! It is the second studio album from the Jimmy Chamberlin and Frank Catalano jazz collaboration. It also features David Sanborn on alto sax, Nir Felder on guitar, and Demos Petropoulos on the organ. The album was released through Ropeadope records on compact disc and limited edition green vinyl.
Unlike 2014's Love Supreme Collective (EP) and their debut album, God's Gonna Cut You Down, this album mostly comprises of cover songs. The album shares the same name as John Coltrane's 1962 record, while the title track itself is a 1926 jazz standard. "Sugar" is a cover of Stanley Turrentine, "All Blues" is Miles Davis, and "At Last" was written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren. The other two tracks, "Chicago Eddie" and "Shakin'", are Catalano originals.
Bye Bye Blackbird is the last studio album from Catalano and Chamberlin, who released a live album, Tokyo Number 9, in 2017. However the pair has continued to be active, having performed a three-night run at Madame ZuZu's in April 2022.
