When recording for Siamese Dream was completed, Corgan and producer Butch Vig felt too emotionally exhausted to mix the record. Corgan suggested Alan Moulder due to his work on Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Moulder booked two weeks in a studio to mix the album; the mix ended up taking 36 days to complete.
During the Mellon Collie sessions, he mostly worked with D'arcy Wretzky and James Iha, while Flood worked with Corgan in a separate room. Moulder was using a Pro Tools rig – a first for the band – slaved to both digital and analog recorders. This opened up a huge range of sonic possibilities and aided the adventurous strengths of Mellon Collie.
Moulder's work on Machina was limited to mixing, with assistance from Corgan, Flood, Bjorn Thorsrud among others. He mixed Zwan's Mary Star of the Sea with assistance from Thorsrud, as was the case with Corgan's debut solo album TheFutureEmbrace.
Aside from the Pumpkins, Moulder has engineered for many other acts active in the 90s, such as Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Marilyn Manson and U2.
