The droning last passage was left as yet another inside joke, an ill-fated figure documented during practice. We were somewhere mid-idea when Jimmy's kick drum pedal would break in half, and rather than stop as we should, James and I would keep playing; thinking that by doing so it would annoy the man now behind his kit on his knees. Amused at first, D'arcy would carry the joke along, until after some minutes she thought our folly dumb and stopped. Her quitting us only inspired the effort further, as we now had two band members we could agitate instead of just one. If there is a punch line to this ill-conceived set-up, it's when Jimmy finally fixed the problem after a decade of minutes and re-joins, all as if nothing happened. As they like to say in Chicago, 'I guess you had to be there.'
