"Tonight, Tonight" released in the US on June 11, 1996! It was first released in Europe the previous April. It was the fourth single from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The song was critically acclaimed and commercially well-received upon its release, reaching #1 in Iceland, #2 in New Zealand, #5 in Scotland, #7 in the UK and #36 on the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as reaching #4 on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The music video accompanying the song was also successful and won several awards. The cover artwork is credited to Billy Corgan.

The recording of "Tonight, Tonight" first began while the Pumpkins were still on the '93-94 Rock Invasion tour when Corgan booked the band into a local Chicago studio to record all of their song ideas on tape. Corgan has said that the song pays homage to Cheap Trick, and that the song is addressed to himself, who escaped from an abusive childhood against all odds so as to keep him believing in himself.

The song was first written in the key of C, but Corgan found this difficult to sing in and changed the key to G (tuned a half step down). The strings for the song were arranged by Corgan and Audrey Riley, and recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Corgan said that recording with a 30-piece string-section was "one of the most exciting recording experiences I have ever had."

AllMusic stated that the song "packs an emotional punch", while NME regarded the song as "swirling [and] grand". On Mellon Collie's entry in Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, "Tonight, Tonight" was praised as "the Pumpkins at their finest". Kerrang! TV placed it at #50 on their list of the best rock songs of all time.

"Tonight, Tonight" was certified Silver in the UK and Gold in New Zealand. The music video, released in May 1996, received heavy airplay on MTV and won 6 awards at the VMAs including Video of the Year. It was also nominated for Best Music Video, Short Form at the 39th Grammy Awards.

The song has been performed over 800 times, debuting at the Double Door in Chicago in February 1995. It is the third most-performed song in live Smashing Pumpkins history.
