{{Social media/Instagram|On this day in | {{Social media/Instagram|On this day in 1992, The Smashing Pumpkins made their first appearance at the Reading Festival in England. Upwards of 65,000 people were in attendance. James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky – who were both wearing dresses – reportedly ended their romantic relationship either just before or after the show, and the band almost broke up entirely. With the stage inundated by crowd surfers, Billy Corgan smashes his guitar at the end of the set, apparently striking the president of Virgin Records in the head. Corgan was very unhappy with the band's performance and the technical problems endured throughout the show, telling Select magazine that "we were so awful it was disgusting". Nonetheless the show was among the most notable for the band up until that time. | ||
