Songs for a Sailor released May 25, 2010! It is the first EP of the Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project. The tracks for the album were released digitally throughout 2009 and 2010 and was released in physical form on May 25. The silk-screened box containing the EP includes a 7" vinyl single and a 2" leopard stone obelisk. The B-side of the 7" record has a groove that is playable, but blank.
A promotional CD was also released in May 2010 with "A Song for a Son" and a shorter version of "Widow Wake My Mind".
To promote Record Store Day in 2010, the band performed live at Amoeba Records, offered free blacklight posters to those who pre-ordered the EP from their local record stores, and released two limited edition 7" singles containing the album's first four songs. "Widow Wake My Mind" was promoted as a radio single, with Corgan appearing on WKQX in Chicago and several major-market stations adding it to rotation. On April 20, 2010, the band performed the song live with an Up with People choir on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
The EP was the first to feature drummer Mike Byrne. The late Mark Tulin of The Electric Prunes performed bass on "A Song for a Son" and "Widow Wake My Mind", with Nicole Fiorentino performing on the other tracks. Kerry Brown performed congas on "Astral Planes" and co-produced the songs with Billy Corgan.
Songs for a Sailor peaked at #16 on the Billboard Tastemaker Albums chart and at #43 on the Independent Albums chart.
