Singles - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack released June 30, 1992! As a whole, it focused on the ascendant Seattle grunge scene of the early 1990s. The final track is the extended version of "Drown" by The Smashing Pumpkins, which became a moderate radio hit and gave the band significant exposure just before work commenced on Siamese Dream.

"Drown" was first released as a promotional single in May 1992. The first take of the song was recorded at Waterfront Studios, which belongs to Lenny Kravitz, who was also signed to Virgin Records. It was intended to be released as a commercial single, but as Billy Corgan explained, Epic Records, who owned the copyright at the time, instead chose to push Screaming Trees and Alice in Chains. Nonetheless, the promotional single became the band's highest-charting single at the time, peaking at #24 on the U.S. Alternative Songs chart.

The song was also released on Rotten Apples in 2001, with the length reduced from 8:17 to 4:30, cutting off the extended feedback and E-Bow solo at the end. "Drown" was considered for Pisces Iscariot, but Corgan decided against it. A version of "Drown" with an alternate guitar solo was included on the bonus CD in the 2011 Reissue of Gish.

At ~412 plays, "Drown" is the band's 11th most-performed song live, debuting at the Gish release party in 1991 and most recently played throughout the Rock Invasion 2 tour. The longest performance according to our records was in Berlin in September 1992 at 11:13 duration.

In 1992, the Singles soundtrack peaked at #6 in the US and eventually went double platinum. A 2-disc edition released in 2017 re-entered the charts and peaked at #33 on the Billboard 200 and at #2 in the Vinyl category. This release coincidentally was one day after the death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, whose music is featured prominently on the soundtrack and who has a cameo in the film, although the release date had been announced in January.

Singles is considered to have helped open the door to the explosive popularity of grunge in the early 1990s. In 2019, it ranked #19 on Rolling Stone's "50 Greatest Grunge Albums" list.
