In November 2005, Corgan and Chamberlin moved in together in rural Arizona to write and rehearse new songs. With the other band members absent, they recorded the album alone – not a serious departure from how previous albums were made. First Chamberlin laid down the drum tracks. Notably, the 10-minute "United States" was recorded in one live take. Next he interviewed touring band members while Corgan recorded guitar, bass, keys and vocals. Chamberlin described the recording sessions as a "long laborious process to greatness." For the first time with SP, he served as a producer and was influential through much of the process.
The band's insistence to record analog was met with distaste by producers. They held out until they met one with the right energy and philosophy, choosing Roy Thomas Baker who they considered "a real soul mate." Terry Date also contributed, who Corgan said helped the songs "resonate on a physical level". The album was largely recorded in Kerry Brown's home studio on the same 24-track recorder used for Mellon Collie. No computers were used for the album. It was recorded in 12-hour days, 6-7 days a week.
Corgan said the goals were to make a rock record commenting on the "emerging fascist" political climate of the US, and explore the nature of his band. It is among the heaviest SP albums. Corgan said that "people wanted to hear some energy, that they didn't want us rolling over and crying in our milk." As for the aggressive drumming, Chamberlin observed that "the world is ready for something with some balls behind it."
Zeitgeist debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and at #1 on the Internet Albums and Rock Albums charts, selling 145,000 copies in its first week. Internationally it was a hit in Canada and New Zealand (#1), UK (#4), Ireland, Italy, Switzerland (#5), among other countries. It garnered critical acclaim, including a 4/5 from Rolling Stone and Uncut. Modern Drummer proclaimed it contains "Chamberlin's greatest drumming ever put to CD."

The album was largely recorded in the home studio of former Catherine drummer (and Darcy's ex-husband) Kerry Brown, using the same 24-track recorder used for Mellon Collie. In fact, no computers were used for the album at all. Recording took place in 12-hr days, 6-7 days a week.
