"Isolation" is a cover song by The Smashing Pumpkins of the 1980 song by Joy Division. It was originally released on the Joy Division tribute album by Billy Corgan's side project, Starchildren. This version of the song also appears on episode 27 ("In Lieu Of Failure") on the Thirty-Three podcast. A different mix branded as The Smashing Pumpkins appears on the 2012 reissue of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
Background[edit | edit source]
Virgin Records approached Corgan about doing a Joy Division cover for the tribute album A Means to an End: The Music of Joy Division. Corgan agreed, despite this being about 8 months into recording Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, which by now was past due and over budget. Corgan asked producer Flood if he would assist, and he reluctantly agreed if Corgan would come in late on a Sunday night to quickly record it, and also would have backing tracks prepared. This became the 57th track to be released from the Mellon Collie studio sessions.[1]
It was likely due to politics with Virgin that the song was released as Starchildren rather than The Smashing Pumpkins, and Corgan even considers it a Smashing Pumpkins cover.[1] A different mix of the song was eventually released as The Smashing Pumpkins on the 2012 reissue of Mellon Collie.
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Be clear every day, every evening
It calls here aloud from above
Carefully watched for a reason
Mistaking devotion and love
Surrendered to self-preservation
From others who care for themselves
But life as it touches perfection
Appears just like anything else
Isolation
Mother, I tried, please believe me
I'm doing the best that I can
I'm ashamed of the things
I've been put through
I'm ashamed of the person I am
Isolation
But if you could just see the beauty
These things I could never describe
Pleasures and wayward distraction
Is this my wonderful prize?
Isolation
