Banter

D’arcy: Good evening. Sorry for keeping you waiting for so long.
Iha: Hey.
Tonight, Tonight (acoustic)
(Billy and James are both tuning)
BC: I can’t tune when you're tuning. Needless to say, we're very happy to be here tonight.
In the Arms of Sleep (acoustic)
BC: Thanks a lot. So uh, just so you know, um, I mean, like, in case you didn't hear, we don't have any of our own stuff because it got caught in the flood thing, you know. So we're sorry about the delay and everything, it's beyond our control. I know, that's okay but we just want everybody to know that we're sorry, we appreciate you still coming. I mean uh, we appreciate the extra effort and uh....
D’arcy: We wanna thank all the bands that lent us equipment.
BC: Yeah, Alice - a lot of the equipment is Alice in Chains, Soundgarden’s and Pearl Jam's.
D’arcy: Unfortunately the sound might not be what it usually is tonight because we don't know how to work their stuff, heh heh.
BC: We can't do the rock like they do but anyway, we love them still and we thank them very much. I think it says a lot about those bands and um....
Iha: Well, they did give us a pretty good rental fee for it, I think like three-fourths price what they’d normally do.
Cupid de Locke (acoustic)
Thirty-three (acoustic)
BC: Is it loud enough? No or yes? All who say it's not loud enough, raise your hand. Wow, I guess you better turn it up.
Landslide (acoustic) (tease - Billy plays guitar and sings variations on a few lines)
(BC: “Took hold of James and took him down. Buy him clothes, threw him out. And I saw James’s reflection in the snow covered hill...so I, I took him down.”)
> Today (acoustic)
BC: How 'bout turning down that loud rock amp of yours, huh?
Soma (acoustic)
Take Me Down (acoustic)
Iha: And now we get rid of the wicker chair. (loud crowd cheering) And now, we’ll stop, we're not gonna rock yet, just yet. We're still gonna be a little bit....
BC: As if you haven't suffered enough. Thank you.
Beautiful
BC: Like to play another golden oldie.
Rocket
Galapogos
BC: Thanks.
[set break]
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Intro
> Where Boys Fear to Tread
Zero
Fuck You
> Love
Iha: I'd uh, I'd personally like to thank Stone Gossard for these guitars. He’s an [unintelligible word] of [unintelligible word] for us.
BC: This looks like a McCready model to me, man.
Iha: I think you've got McCready. After the show, I will be backstage selling one of these, he uh, he said it's cool.
To Forgive
BC: (British accent) Okay like, we're gonna try this one because its a new one and like um...we hope you like it. (normal) Ready Stone, I mean James?
Iha: Heh! It’s definitely...
Alive (tease - Billy attempts to play main riff)
Iha: What, what's that?
BC: That's I'm Alive or...
Iha: No, that’s done.
Alive (tease - Billy plays chords this time and Iha sings a little of the chorus)
> Bullet with Butterfly Wings
BC: We broke Darcy's cord so it'll be a moment, sorry. That's James, Jimmy, D’arcy.
Iha: I’m Jaime.
BC: We are the Monkees.
Iha: Hmm.
BC: We're the rats in the cages, that's right. Is it fuckin' loud enough or what?
Iha: It doesn’t really seem --
BC: Turn it up or turn it down? (gruff voice) Turn it up. (normal voice) There's this whole weird part in the middle where they don't know what to do. Right there.
Iha: (British accent) Bruce? Our soundman Bruce.
D’arcy: Where are you, Bruce?
Iha: (British accent) These fucking people wanna hear louder guitars.
D’arcy: Where the heck...? He's not even here!
BC: He went home, he's had enough of this bullshit.
D’arcy: Yeah, he's a smart guy.
BC: Are you ready to rock again?
D’arcy: Oh yeah, yeah yeah.
Thru the Eyes of Ruby
Disarm
Iha: What? Oh, yeah and uh....
BC: It's your part in the script.
Iha: Alright, um, yeah, so, um, heh heh, now that we're in Seattle, now it's time to...rock.
Geek U.S.A.
> Cherub Rock
BC: Here, have some water, okay? ... Heh, are you in tune yet there, D’arcy?
D’arcy: I'll be there soon enough.
BC: Would you like a D note?
D’arcy: I'm doing an - I’m doing the A note.
Iha: Whoa!
D’arcy: Our tuners didn't make it through the river.
Iha: Ugh!
BC: You're almost there, little engine.
D’arcy: Close enough.
Iha: So we hope you're havin’ fun. And we hope you're enjoying this lo-fi Smashing Pumpkins concert.
BC: We figured that we could be like Pavement playing Smashing Pumpkins songs.
Iha: What a [unintelligible].
BC: Of course, not that Pavement could play these songs but it’s a - you can go with it in your brain. Random notes, heh heh.
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
BC: Like to play one more song. Thank you again. You've been totally fucking awesome cool. You've given us - you’ve given us a great gift and that's your patience and your attention and we appreciate that very much. We ne - we know we never smile enough but we're having a good time, I swear. So like to play one more syrupy love song and then we'll go away.
X.Y.U.
[encore break]
Iha: Thank you very much. How you feelin’? We feel...very melted with our equipment. I feel almost if the button on my trousers were to snap. (British accent) Would you like to see the button on my trousers snap? (normal voice) I'm just kidding, it's just a Spinal Tap-ism. So anyways, we're glad you're having a fun time at our low - low tech show and uh...this next song is crazy, you're gonna love it.
1979
BC: Thank thank thank thanks a lot. Like to do the 25th song off of Mellon Collie...and the - and the Infinite, Infinite Tea.
Muzzle
> Silverfuck / Space Jam / Drown
BC: Thanks. Bless you, goodnight, you guys have been great, thank you.
[encore break]
BC: Thanks. We'd like to try to do one more s-s-s-s-song. We can't thank you enough for putting up with the late hour and the long songs and all that shredding. Thanks up there!
Iha: Thanks down here and uh, thank you much.
BC: And you! Thank you.
Iha: Night night.
BC: And you, thank you.
Iha: And uh, we'd also like to thank all the bands and all the rental people for all this stuff, thanks again for all this.
BC: Yeah, and also um, a nice round of applause for our road crew who have been here all day trying to make this happen. They're wealthy people...and we've given the song to them.
Farewell and Goodnight
(below is over piano outro)
Jimmy: Goodnight.
Iha: (high pitched) Thank you.
BC: Goodnight, god bless you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.
D’arcy: Thank you, goodnight.
BC: We're glad we could make this happen. Ah, everybody left.
