"Ava Adore" released May 18, 1998! It is the first single from The Smashing Pumpkins' fourth album, Adore, and exhibited a new sound from the band which integrated traditional instruments with loops and electronic music. The song reached #1 in Iceland, #2 in Greece, #5 in New Zealand and the top 20 in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and the UK. In the US, it reached #3 on the Modern Rock chart, #8 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and #42 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video was released on June 1, 1998, directed by Dom and Nic, and later won an award for "most stylish video" at the 1998 VH1 Fashion Awards.
The main release included the B-sides "Czarina" and "Once in a While", both of which appeared on the 2014 re-issue of Adore. "Once in a While" also appeared on the 1998 Japanese edition of Adore.
The recording featured drums by Matt Walker (who replaced Chamberlin for the latter half of the Infinite Sadness tour), and was produced by Billy Corgan and Brad Wood. Wood's classic EMS VCS3 "Putney" analog monosynth can be heard prominently on the song.
Lyrically, Corgan explained "Ava Adore" was "ostensibly written about some objectified person", and that there is no actual Ava. He further explained the lyrics "more a screed to my frustration at the fairer sex than say what might meld two souls together; 'we must never be apart' more a demand than any state of absolution." The bulk of recording took place in a single morning and afternoon. Corgan, who produced the song with initial assistance from Brad Wood, said he might have "made a better effort to examine what made the track provocative, and for its time, too strange" had he known it was going to released as the album's lead single.
The cover artwork shows fashion model Amy Wesson, photographed by Corgan's then-girlfriend and collaborator Yelena Yemchuk.
"Ava Adore" has been performed live ~490 times (3 Corgan solo) according to our records. It has historically been a staple at most live shows and so far has been included in the setlists for the current Rock Invasion 2 tour.
