Album of the week
Teargarden by Kaleidyscope is not technically an album, but a collection of two EPs along with Oceania and Monuments to an Elegy. It was originally conceived as an ambitious 44-song concept album loosely inspired by the Tarot, with each song being released individually as a free download. Billy Corgan said he considers the sound a return to the Pumpkins' "psychedelic roots", and told MusicRadar it found him "looking past, present and future all at the same time and trying to have that perspective". After 34 tracks were released, the project was abandoned. Nonetheless, all components had decent chart success, especially Oceania which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200.
Song of the day
"Ava Adore" is the first Smashing Pumpkins single from their fourth album, Adore, and exhibited a new sound from the band which integrated traditional instruments with loops and electronic music. The music video was filmed in one long take and is notable for its cinematic motion changes. The calculations required to work out the speed changes caused massive delays on set, causing the band to nearly call off the entire plan. It went on to win an award for "most stylish video" at the 1998 VH1 Fashion Awards. "Ava Adore" reached at #1 in Iceland and #2 in Greece, and in the US it peaked at #42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at #3 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Did you know...
- ...that the cover song "Never Let Me Down Again" was recorded in 1993 at BBC Radio One by request of bassist D'arcy Wretzky?
- ...that Sharon Osbourne briefly managed The Smashing Pumpkins in late 1999?
- ...that the girls on the cover of the "Today" single are D'arcy Wretzky's sister and a family friend?
- ...that the In Ashes animated series was named after Sumerian Records CEO, Ash Avildsen? The joke was that by signing with Sumerian Records, The Smashing Pumpkins and Sumerian are "going to go up in flames … and end up in ashes."
- ...that the arrangements for TheFutureEmbrace followed an unusual process of splitting melodies into four parts based on their pitch, and the production team would program synths in each voicing and combine them into a multitrack recording?
