Smart Studios
Smart Studios was a recording studio in Madison, Wisconsin owned by Butch Vig and Steve Marker, setup in 1983 to produce local bands. It is where The Smashing Pumpkins' Gish was recorded.

Other artists that recorded there include Nirvana, Soul Asylum, along with Vig and Marker's own band, Garbage. The studio survived various mishaps, including flooding, and in 2003, a backhoe crashing through the walls of the downstairs studio.[1] On May 1, 2010, the studio closed its doors because of financial difficulties.[2] A documentary entitled The Smart Studios Story (2016) interviewed artists and producers who recorded there, including Billy Corgan.
