Light Into Dark released April 12, 1989! It was a compilation album featuring various Chicago-area acts, including The Smashing Pumpkins. It was the band's first commercial release under a record label, as well as their first vinyl appearance. It was the only official release containing the songs "Sun" and "My Dahlia" until the 2012 reissue of Pisces Iscariot. "Sun" from The Smashing Pumpkins self-titled demo cassette is a different mix.

The 1989 LP was limited to 1000 copies on black vinyl. In 2002, 1000 CDs were made commemorate the 13th anniversary of the original Halo Records release party at the The Metro in Chicago.

Both songs are early Pumpkins rarities that were recorded in late 1988 at Real Time Studios. A different version of "Sun" was known as "Death of a Mind" when it was played with The Marked (Billy Corgan's previous band) and at early Pumpkins shows. "Sun" has been performed roughly 10 times live, all in 1988 and 1989. "My Dahlia" has been performed all of two times according to our records: first at the Avalon in Chicago in 1989, and a single other time to a group of lucky fans at a VIP 'In Plainsong' pre-show in Minneapolis on June 25, 2015.

Other bands featured on Light Into Dark include Sevenletters, Ghost Swami, Prince Of Priesthood, Gold September and Poster Children.
