The music video for "Anno Satana" served as episode 3 of the 'In Ashes' animated series, written by Billy Corgan. In this episode, entitled "I'm In Love With Your God" (foreshadowing the song "Purple Blood" which would be released a month later), the two of the main protagonists stumble upon a cult-style ritual taking place in the woods, where they are captured. They follow the dance moves of the antagonists, and the situation grows more tense as the two are in seeming peril.
Corgan has said "Birch Grove" was written for his children, and that it's also The Smashing Pumpkins' tribute to Italian composer Giorgio Moroder. The song was originally written on piano. He performed it on acoustic guitar for The Howard Stern Show on December 1, 2020.
Consequence Sound called "Anno Satana" a "thunderous" new wave song, and praised the "glacial bath of synths" of the accompanying "Birch Grove", adding that both songs demand re-listens.
