BC: No. We have another blown amp. Nothing, there’s no sound. (Iha stops)
Iha: Alright, geez Louise, this is where I’m gonna--
BC: (realizing and laughing) It was my fault, I didn’t plug in my (laughing harder) guitar.
Iha: (laughing) Holy shit, I was like....
BC: Ladies and gentlemen, speaking of James, way back in 1992, we (laughing) were playing to Tokyo.
Iha: Alright, let’s, let’s go back in time.
(Billy and Iha gesture and make small rewinding noises)
BC: James, do you remember the first time you played St. Louis?
Iha: No, of course not! I mean...I like the Arch--
BC: Do you remember the song?
Iha: I like the Arch, you know, it’s....
BC: Wow, they’ve never heard that one before.
Iha: (sputtering) Okay, well, what the–-?
BC: (mockingly) What a lovely Arch you have!
Iha: Alright.
Gloria (tease)
Iha: (singing) Gloria! Gloria, Gloria!
(crowd cheers)
BC: The Jamers! The Jamers are going wild tonight.
Iha: Don’t worry, we’re gonna play some music. We’re not just gonna fuck around here.
BC: James, they’re not booing, they’re yelling “James”.
Iha: They’re -- no, they’re not.
Mayonaise
BC: James, we’re rockin’ so hard I blew up my...guitar rig, heh heh.
Iha: Oh geez.
BC: This is where you have to pull out the story of your life right here.
Iha: Hey....
BC: You were born....?
Iha: Heh! I was a small child...born in, uh, Illinois, the Midwest. (large crowd roar) A lot like a place like this. And I said, I gotta rock. I gotta really rock.
(brief guitar riff)
Iha: What do you guys wanna hear? We’re taking requests now. (crowd yelling) Heh heh heh heh! Alright, it’s a lot of...I hear a lot of, uh, requests. (crowd continues yelling)
BC: Wanna play something old and I’ll just sing along?
Iha: Sure. Uh... (pause)
BC: Hahahahaha!
Iha: We could do that next song that we had on the setlist, but...heh heh heh....
BC: You mean just have me sing that one?
Iha: Yeah, be a little rough, but....
BC: But who’s gonna play the clean guitar part?
(Kiki briefly plays a few notes of the riff)
Iha: Uh, Kiki, (laughing) the latest member of the Smashing Pumpkins.
BC: Hahaha! It’s Kiki’s problem now, heh heh.
Iha: Heh heh heh heh heh heh. Kiki on the break, we’ll, uh, both go to a -- a clean patch and we’ll both play the chords.
BC: Kiki’s metal hints? ... Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, it happens sometimes.
Iha: I know.
BC: You know, I was born in the Midwest too....
Iha: Heh heh heh heh heh heh! But then you went away to Florida! St. Pete.
BC: (scoffing) In 1985.
Iha: Well, okay, you left. You left the--
BC: But I came back.
Iha: You left the Midwest.
BC: But I came back!
Iha: You came back to the Midwest.
BC: And then I left again! And then I came back again (laughing).
Iha: Heh. Who’s proud of their Midwestern heritage here? (crowd cheers) Okay, everyone.
BC: Is this where we admit that you’re a member of the Anheuser-Busch family or....? Heh heh heh.
Iha: Heh heh heh.
BC: Is that where we go with this?
Iha: Well, we could talk about the, uh, Cardinals or the Blues or uh...?
Crowd: Blues!!
BC: They’re not booing you, James--
Iha: I thought you guys were supposed to have some spirit here.
BC: They’re not booing you.
Iha: Oh, okay.
BC: They’re singing “Blues.”
Iha: Bluuues. Blues.
Guy in crowd: I mean, hurry it up!
Iha: Heh.
BC: Hahahaha!
Iha: Don’t worry, we’ll be doing another set tonight. This just happens when, uh, the piano player doesn’t show up.
BC: Yeah. We keep goin’, we’ll be down by the river by the end of this.
(Billy wanders away from the mic to talk to Jimmy)
Iha: It’s working, it’s (laughing), it’s going, it’s...but it’s, it’s very low volume and we’re trying to figure out why that is. I feel like there’s some sort of hex. St. Louis hex.
BC: No, no, no, no.
Iha: No, it’s not, it’s not--
BC: It’s ‘cause you brought up the Arch.
Iha: It’s us, it’s, heh....
BC: As soon as you bring up the Arch, it all goes (small gesture).... Anybody get to see the wrestling?
Jimmy: (off mic) Keep going!
BC: Heh heh heh. Jimmy told me to keep going. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums.
Iha: Alright, fuck it, I’ll introduce the band right now.
BC: Yeah, let’s introduce the band, that’s a good one.
Iha: The latest member of the Smashing Pumpkins, Miss Kiki Wong.
Master of Puppets (tease - Kiki)
Iha: (laughing) You could play more if you want, if you (trails off laughing).... On vocals and acoustic guitar, all the way from Down Under, Miss Katie Cole, everyone. You know him, you love him, on the bass guitar, Mr. Jack Bates. Jack...has been telling me he’s got some stand up material and now would be a great time to hear it! (Jack gestures “no”) Come on, you had that bit you wanted to do and you said “I’d really love to do it in front of a big audience.” ...
BC: This is where you’re gonna introduce Jimmy again, heh heh heh.
Iha: This, heh heh...shit. Heh heh! This is the greatest rock drummer, Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin. This is kind of an out of body experience right now.
BC: (pointing over the crowd) But the light is back on, you see, the light’s come back on. It’s....
Iha: You gotta light up something. Heh.
BC: (laughing) Are you having a good time?
Iha: They are but they want...some god damn rock music. (pause) Who [unintelligible word or noise]...?
BC: Hahaha. (pause) Maybe you should lead a sing along. ...
Blew Away (tease)
BC: (singing) Blew, blew, blew away....
Iha: Hahahahaha, I can -- I can’t remember that one right now.
BC: The Jamers wanna hear it. (small crowd cheer) Yeah, you sing Landslide, why don’t you sing that one?
Landslide (tease - Billy sings the first two verses and chorus)
BC: God bless the Dixie Chicks, that was such a great...great version.
Iha: I-I--
BC: My god, when I heard that Dixie Chicks version, I wanted to kill myself (small pause) again.
Iha: I think we got some kind of sound. (tests guitar)
(Billy’s guitar tech is kneeling in front of him)
BC: (off mic to tech)
Iha: Oh, I’ll take that.
(more guitar testing with Billy talking off mic about getting a new cabinet)
Iha: This happens all the time.
(Billy testing guitar and it sounds worse)
BC: (off mic) See, this cab sucks, [unintelligible].
(Billy’s tech leaves)
BC: James, we have a blown cabinet.
Iha: Oh. Don’t we have another one of those?
BC: Should I just get an acoustic and just...? Well, my guitar tech’s fixing my stuff, I’ll go get my guitar.
(Billy trades his electric guitar for an acoustic)
BC: Heh heh heh heh, I know what to play! (2 guitar strums) Heh heh heh, wrong key. What do you wanna hear? (crowd yelling) I just hear people shouting for Pearl Jam songs, I don’t know what to do.
